. looking for recommendations for a front sight for my TC hawken with a green mountain 32 round ball barrel. right now the barrel has the bead front sight I bought the 57 sml for the rear sight. while its shoots great as is I always associated peeps with post sights rather than a bead. thought of the the lyman globe front sight. if I was just shooting paper with this id get the front clobe, since I will hunt hogs and deer with this some im unsure of the globe, I like a white bead for hunting hogs as it s shows up well in deep dark forest where I hunt. as is ive shot sub 2 inch groups at 100 yards when loaded with a 100 grains of 2F pyrodex and 2f goex patch is .018

Since you like the bead and it has a bead and since yer groups are sub 2" the advice from N AZ is to carry on and save the sight money for flowers to the wife next time she catches you smuggling in a new gun

Since it is what you like for the huntin' you do, if the bead sight on it now is not a white bead I would replace it with one that is.

Get a Lyman globe front sight.

Lyman #: 3201150

Since you already have a top notch rear sight get a quality front sight too. There is a disk that looks like a bead. There are posts, the aperture ones will let you make the smallest possible iron sight groups.

Ok, wait a minute. Am I reading this right?

Well then,, why not just get the patridge style front post from Track?

Howie,
It ain't broke, don't try to fix it. A little white model paint and you got what you asked for! A white bead front sight...
Love those Green Mountain barrels. My new .50 has one, loads and shoots like a dream..
Mine came with the Lyman Ghost Globe, I just need to get a set of inserts for it.

I have this sight on my rifle. As has been recommended by others, I painted my front sight with some of the wife's nail polish (currently bright pink  ). I've tried white out and trim paint and found that neither work as well as nail polish.

I love this barrel, I did paint the gold bead white, I guess it just looks weird compared to a post but I am pleased with the accuracy im heading to shoot here in a bit. I had some .535 balls come in. I want to work up a load for those and see if I can better the .530 with .018 loading that for now is the most accurate

Seems to be working for you. Personally, I like a black, or browned, front sight. Patridge type is always good. That is probably why it has long been very popular. I have found a dark sight to work well even in low light. Black will give a contrast against even dark targets. When you can no longer see it, that is time to go home. And, once you have settled on the best ball size for your needs do consider casting your own.

I coated my .50 GPR's front site with white nail polish and it wasn't quite enough. I bought a small bottle of neon yellow acrylic paint from Wally World and added a few drops and that seems to be working pretty well for me. Been using the buckhorn rear sight and after getting used to it, it's pretty darned good. I still may end up getting a Lyman Globe front sight and a receiver peep rear sight, but we will see. I have a Williams peep on my T/C .50 Renegade that I like really well. I never much thought about sights until the last year or two. The eyes man, the eyes ... :idunno:
I may try the bright pink nail polish too. Neon orange is next. I like to experiment and it's easy to change it.

If you want the best inserts money can buy for the Lyman 17 series got the Lee Shavers inserts. They have several different sized pins and even crosshairs.

I ordered a 10 piece card set of Shavers Target inserts for the new rifle yesterday. It has a 17AML Lyman globe on the front, and the insert that come with in it covers up a 12" plate at 75 meters. Unacceptable! They should be here in a few days.

You will not be disappointed.

the 57 is the rear sight it came with 2 different aperatures, you can leave the apperatures out and use the big hole for hunting or screw one of the smaller aperatures in

I just bought one of those also. Included with the globe was a packet of inserts which has three different posts. These are similar to what is in another rifle I have used for many years. They should work. But, the extra insert set might come in handy. Either way, in this game you can never have enough 'stuff' kicking around.

The rifle I bought is 25 years old, the sight set the same age. No extra parts. The Shaver inserts came in today. Ultra fine, made of spring steel, no plastic. Can't wait to get it back out to finish load development.
