What if you go out to shoot and you can not clean the gun right away? Or what about elk hunting when I have a few hours before I get home. What can I do to make sure I do not hurt by bore?

Just bring the jag, a small bag with solvent-wet patches, a small bag of dry and a small bag of bore butter or other lube wet patches. I'm talking like those little snack sized ziplocks.

Run a couple solvent patches down the bore, then the dry until they come out dry and then follow with a lube patch.

Wipe the nipple and hammer area with each as well and that will keep you for several days no problem.

Ok, to make it easy, Mix up One oz of murphy's oil soap, one oz of alcohol and one oz of peroxide. Mix well. put in small bottle that you can pour a little down the barrel easy. Plug nipple or Touchole. Pour a little (oz)in barrel, hold finger on end of barrel and tilt up and down. Lean gun at angle so nipple is toward ground, unplug nipple and let drain out. If it don't start, push it out gently with patch on ramrod. Pump it good after it is out. Run a dry patch and be sure, real sure to lube bore. As it will clean it to the bone. You won't have to carry much , as a little does the job. Hot water when you get home. Dilly

As mentioned, a few hours will not hurt, you can wipe the bore with a patch with lube on it to keep the fouling soft, the jury is out on peroxide, some feel it can damage a barrel. I would suggest some research before you use it, when the cleaning time comes cold water will work as well if not better than hot, just make sure barrel is completely dry and lube well when finished.

I use a solution. 1/3 Murphy's oil, 1/3 windshield fluid and 1/3 409. Run a couple of wet patches followed by some dry patches. It will keep your barrel til you can give it a good cleaning later. I have done this and left my rifle for a couple of days, and still no rust. Just something that works for me :v .

This same situation led a friend to develop a system that is quite quick and simple. His was not for hunting, but would work. You might look it up:

I've gone out shooting and not been able to clean the rifle until evening. Hasn't hurt it at all...

RELOAD Just as fast as you can. Your patch/bullet will lube plenty well to last a day, and clean well when you get to camp or home. Done this lots of times and no bad results over many years. (I guess you are using real black) Lots of luck and I hope you have to face this many times.

Depends where you are. If in the dry mountain county of wyo or colo then the humidity is low enough that you can go days before cleaning. If in a high humidity area then you should clean as soon as you reasonably can.

Sealed single packs of Wet wipes work well as a field expedient. Just cut 'em to size, and use the left over to clean your hands.

Dry patch and oil, and your bore will out last you.

What works well for me is to take an empty eye drop bottle and fill it with a solution of equal part murphys oil soap ,distilled water, alcohol, and amonia. This holds half of an ounce. After last shot I wet a patch and run it down the bore . When I get home I do a better cleaning.

CAUTION : Put a new lable on bottle.

Agreed - keep a bag of wet ones (handy wipes) with you. They have many uses around camp:
From wiping of you face to cleaning your backside as well as a temp. cleaning on your bp gun.

:hatsoff:

I can probably just run a patch or 2 of Hoppes 9 patch lube and solvent, Lehigh Valley, or spray Ballistol down the bore. That should keep powder soft and they are all preservatives. It's that simple I guess.
