What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Here's a hint on this problem. First off, my wife doesn't hold any animosity toward guns or me owning guns but I think if she knew how many I have she would be raising an eyebrow. However, the secret is to never let her see more than one gun at a time. To those who don't like or are indifferent to guns they all look the same.

I bought three rifles this weekend. I need to quit watching auctions.

I shot the Fowler today. Went five for nine on my own range. Obviously, i haven't shot in a couple months. It was great to make some smoke but I’d hoped for better. The woods were still really wet eventho it hasn’t rained in a couple days. There are still some Chanterelles around but those I found were just a couple days past prime. I was surprised to see them this late. Today was a great day.

To the range today (different range than last trip) with my Pedersoli kit-built Harper's Ferry. Main purpose of trip was to practice shooting pistol with tapered barrel and front sight but no rear sight. Loads were 35 gr. 3F Swiss, balls were 0.570, and patches were 0.010 spit-lubed. Those were the only patches I had with me and they were a little "loose". Double-patched was too "tight". I would have liked to try 0.015 patches. Maybe next time.

Weather was mild for early December in Wisconsin, but pretty good breeze from the west, and this range used today is notorious for being a funnel for west winds.

So after only six shots, my purpose for the range trip was fulfilled, and with a dull flint needing replacement and no longer sparking well enough for 100% ignition (ya, I carried a spare - could have done a field swap) and mostly the miserable wind, I really wasn't having much fun any more, and so called it a day.

Yesterday I worked on the Late Lancaster .45 cal flintlock project---the one I'm building using Pecatonica parts. I had had a problem with the double set triggers not working right. It could not go to half or full cock without first setting the back trigger. So I drilled and tapped a hole behind the set trigger and put in a grub screw. It has a hex head, not a slot head, but it won't be noticeable. 6-32 tap. It is flush with the trigger plate and will be obscured by the trigger guard anyway. Now the cock goes to half and full cock positions w/o the set trigger being pulled back. However, the front trigger can't be fired without the rear trigger being set. I can live with that. Also I trimmed excess threads off the lock plate screws and the tang screw. Next step will be either doing the much dreaded "drilling of the touch hole" or inletting the trigger guard. Those will be followed by shortening and shaping the butt to it the butt plate. Those being done I will be greatly relieved.

9 Dec 2024 Yesterday I drilled a 1/16" hole exactly where I wanted it and then used the 1/4-90 degree countersink and thought I had gotten the diameter exactly 1/4". Not so. Today I went to drill the pilot hole and discovered I must not have bought a #3 bit. So I wasted the morning procuring one. Tonight I drilled and tapped, but the bevel has disappeared. Only a moment ago was I able to relocate that countersink so that tomorrow I can enlarge the diameter. I have to tap the rest of the hole by hand. I had taken the barrel out of the press vise thinking I had gone all the way through.

its been a fantastic mn muzzleloader season so far I scored opening night. my closest friend came up to camp on friday and yesterday morning between weather fronts scored a 178 lb crab claw 8 and then last night my son connected with a 205 lb 8 now if we can just get his future bride a good buck we will have filled our wildest dreams.
