I have used Acetone, but use this outside, and stay down wind of it. Its nasty stuff, but it will take the finish off with the stroke of a brush. Then wash it in water to neutralize the acetone, and let it dry for a couple of days. It will then be ready for refinishing.

I would use one of the natural based paint/finish strippers that are sold in most hardware stores. Takes a little longer, but is much eaiser to use.
That finish doesn't come off easy, but that stripper will soften it up enough you can scrape it off with a paint scraper.
The wood is actualy very nice under that urathane crap.

MEK or Formby's Finish Remover will do the job. Don't take them to a furniture stripping shop.

what's best to remove the factory t/c finish?

I've dropped off several at a local antique furniture place that has a commercial stripping booth...pick it up a week later clean and dry to the bare wood...no fuss, no muss, no chemicals & fumes, no sanding to change stock dimensions, etc...$20, take it home and start applying Tru-Oil.

If the "finish" includes the stain, then use Easy Off oven cleaner. Spray it liberally leave on for 5 minutes and wash off. Repeat if necessary, but don't overdo it and don't do it more than 3 times. Its strips everything off to the bare wood. Works like a charm.

If you follow my suggestions, you won't have to do anything but steel wool and restain the stock to the color you want. It won't raise the grain. I do it all the time.

I have also used Easy Off Oven cleaner on war torn military stocks. After striping the finish and rinsing with Hot water between applications. It will also remove Black colored water stains on Oil based finishes from the wood, just use a stiff brand new tooth brush to scrubb the stain out .:winking:
