I'd like to use a modern rod for loading while shooting at the range. Any reccomendations on whether I should use a modern cleaning rod or one of the modern sythethic ram rods?

Thanks

I have a Tresco steel range rod with bore guide that I use both for loading at the range and for cleaning. I don't like the synthetic ones. YMMV

I use a MBS brass rod at the range and for cleaning I like the extra weight it provides. For hunting I load with the range rod and if necessary the regular ramrod in the field very carefully. To answer your question I always use a bore guide when possible.

I have five steel ones that I buy from Mountain State Muzzleloading, 4x for rifles in .38, .45. .54, .58, & a .32 pistol rod. They come with a grooved synthetic handle & a nylon bore guide. I use them for loading & cleaning & have been very happy with them.

Snuffer,

I used Dutch Shoultz's plans to make a brass rod with an antique door knob handle. It's heavy but I even use it on trailwalks. GW

This is for me as close as can be to the perfect rod. I use it for half a year now and I am very happy with it.
I bought it from a guy who makes them himself. Sold it on a big ML-shooting event over here in germany.

Steel, completly covered with plastic, no chance to make a scratch to the barrel.
Made for every caliber in it´s own size.
The brass tip holds cleaning patches perfect, is rounded on it´s foreend for loading roundballs and brushes etc. can be screwed in.
The complete rod can be disassembled if necassary.

The guy has no website so I made two pics for you.

October Country will make up brass under barel rods custom for any gun $20.00, they have threds both ends for all acseseries. I bought a T/C "T" handel for mine and a bore guide. Looks good on the gun to. My 2 cents. Fisher King.

I use the same thing Jethro uses for the same reasons. I also have one I made up out of 7/16" hichory dowwel for my shorter barreled rifles, 36" and below. I find it a little more convenient to use than the longer steel rod. It also helps that the shorter barreled rifles are .50 and above.

My range rod is a long hickory rod with a brass threaded tip on each end. I didn't cut the hickory rod down, just left it long, have lots of room to get hold of it. Dilly

I use a homemade brass rod and guide at the range and a brass under barrel rod when out in the field

I use a Dixie Super Rod for the range, and use a hickory ramrod (the underbarrel one) in the field. The Dixie rod has pinned and threaded caps on both ends, and works really well. It's some type of synthetic material, and is a little bit more flexible than I'd like, but otherwise, works just fine.

I'm with Joel. I've had two Dixie Super Rods for over 15 years, one .54 and one .45. You can load and clean with it. Unscrew the top part to expose a ball puller, which I've had to use a couple of times. I think they are a great rod for the money  .

I usually use a stainless steel cleaning rod with brass bore guide. I prefer the nylon guides as they're softer and don't wear as fast, but brass is what I have so I use it. I tend to forget to take it and end up using the gun's rod sometimes. Works fine either way.

Anybody use those cheap $15 flexible brown plastic ones i think made by TC?

I picked one up on sale last year for $5 i think. Their not fiberglass, but should I be using a bore guide with it regardless? ( I hate bore guides)
