This is a serious question. I have to admit that I've never used it and I've alway wondered what makes it so special.

Is it some molecular property that better?
Are bears more fatty and therefore more lube per critter?
Is the oil produced cleaner or less offensive in smell?

I personally only use greased patches when I hunt. This is because I don't like to clean while I'm out in the woods. I personally use a possum/beeswax mixture that I made up a couple years ago and it works greats.

When using animal grease, one must concider the shelf life before it turns rancid, your nose should let you know when it's getting close to time...

Also, there is the salt content to concider, some fats have salts in them (like pork), making a lube from salty lards and greases is just asking for a barrel replacement...

I hear it's good, but I wouldn't want 20 pounds of it laying about...

Good to know that a possum has a reason for being on this earth! :what:
I always thought he was here just to prove that God does have a sense of humor.

Russ: That was soooooooo funny. 'Possums are the most horrible creature. I can't count how many of the things I've caught when I was a kid trapping 'coon.
'Coon hunters hate 'em too as they are often tree'd by hounds.

S'poke - I can't speak from personal knowledge, but a few people who have experience with it say its shelf life is indefinite. This may not be so as far as the flavor for use in cooking, but for other general purposes I guess it just never goes bad.

I had a batch of fat that I was gonna render, but then some critters got into it. I have another fresh batch on the way and I'm gonna work with it. Ask again in twenty yers and i'll tell ya the results.

Regards, sse

Shelf life should be indefinite with any oil rendered properly. The oil that I got from that opossum is almost clear. I still have half a bottle.
I've often wondered if bear oil's popularity has something to with the mystic of "the bear" itself. Kinda akin to the reason if you yell "hey griz" at a rondy half the people turn around.
