When did people start using brass parts on powder horns like the brass lever type stopper or the spring loaded push button brass stopper? Just curious. I see them at shows or on line.

Matchlocks often had horn flask with metal tops and bottoms. Townsend says horn was the plastic of the day, a handy way of looking at it. Horn and metal were often mixed.
horns made with brass tips and spouts would not become popular in America till late in ML times and well into cartridge era. A time after metal flask became popular for ml, cr 1850 and post.

Back in 1970 , not knowing even very little about powder horns , J.C. Pennies had some powder horns made in India. (they still used them there). The horn I bought had a brass spring loaded powder valve on it , unlike anything I have ever seen. It worked amazingly well , but not 18th century. I was stupid and eventually gave it away , when I eventually thought a plug would be better. .......oldwood

I don't do reenactments any longer , so I have no interest in Hist. Correctness. I love the new spring valves for the range. Safety , convenience , etc.. For this old guy , :thumb:
