Just for perspective, when I started in the early '70's, the things that were accepted as authentic, many were found to be incorrect as the years passed. I do find it rather sad that now, so much information has been documented of what was actually used, that so many ignore the research, and do something off the wall when doing it right would cost no more.

On behalf of my fellow reenactors I apologize to all of you who went to historic events and were not allowed to shoot even though your baseball cap identifies as a tricorn and your TC hawken identifies as a colonial flintlock.

Very simple answer here.
I shoot and hunt with friends, some of whom I have been shooting and hunting with for 60 years.
Some of them shoot muzzleloaders, some do not.
I am in that camp - I shoot and hunt with my muzzleloaders of which I have a collection that includes flints, percussions, and a couple of touch hole fired handgonnes.
My interests also include long range precision, which only 2 of my shooting buddies partake.
If you want some challenging shooting try 3" gongs at 1000 yards, or standing steel buffalos at 1500 yards.
The shooting sports have a lot to enjoy - and the only "dress up" that I enjoy is full cammo when turkey or free range deer hunting.

They really need to be more welcoming. It is expensive to get all period correct. Unless you are rich, you cannot do it all at once. Trying to force perfection onto new people is a sure fire way to drive them away. Before long they have very few or no one. Then they all sit around scratching their backsides complaining about no new blood in their re-enactments.

First, when a group starts a shoot that is period clothing and flintlock only to shoot. Do you really think that their main goal is to have more shooters to show up with non compliant firearms. They are not "unwelcoming", they have set what is important to them (usually historical context) and will welcome all like minded individuals with the desire to participate.

The people I personally have been involved with have given articles of clothing and loaned/sold flintlocks to newbies who have interest in the shoots and time period specified and as long as the newbie is showing an effort to fit in almost all flaws in their kit are overlooked.

Maybe I am lucky, I have never seen this "unwelcoming" attitude when people show up, ask questions and show interest. Now, if you show up with an attitude and I am going to shoot in my ballcap and TC percussion rifle in your PC flintlock only shoot that's on you.

Second, if you go and buy all hand sewn, period correct fabric, custom built flintlock, yes it will cost you big bucks. BUT almost none of us ever started there, we borrowed shirts, wore cheap crappy shoes that gave us blisters and gradually over time improved our kit until it met OUR level of satisfaction usually with quite a bit of encouragement and guidance from those who went before us.

You guys that denigrate the reenactors because all you want to do is be able to shoot in the BP only deer season........

everyone's experience is different. I have had good and bad results with different groups. It is what it is.

We have two reenactment / rendezvous every year one living history one an Indian pow wow .Here in Fort Edward NY where Rogers Rangers have an island ,troops and Indians camped along the great carrying place and Jane McCrea was murdered. With Burgoyne named roads and buildings and James Fenimore Cooper got inspiration for his books in Glens Falls living reenactors set up for a week cooking and living in full kit and have skirmish at the end .They are a closed group you MUST adhere to correct HC and PC no excuse which makes for an exciting and educational glimpse into that period in time. On the other end the Indian gathering is a bit more showy.My wife is 25% American Indian and absolutely looks and lives it. When we go to enjoy the "spectacle" many of the "Indian" participants treat her like she is an outsider because she doesn't dress according to their idea how she should dress at the event even though we go to watch not to participate.In my opinion she is more native American then many there. I guess because she isn't dressed in buckskin and moccasins is married to a white man and isn't joining in the dancing or show she is disrespecting their gathering.Talk about the dump truck calling the cement truck heavy.If your intent on participating in an event follow the rules they are there for a reason but also if your immersed in the life style remember you started somewhere. Teach the prospect don't look down on them there may come a time where where the student will become the teacher and the gatherings might become larger and more diverse. If you shun and look down on prospects the word gets out your group is a bunch of A*****es and after while no one wants to participate or watch then your a bunch of old guys camping. So many youth and young adults have no idea of our history and what it took to build this country. Schools don't teach it anymore so it's up to us to create an environment that will draw not repel. Not everyone can afford a $2000.00 period correct rifle or hundreds of dollars in period cloths and if no one tells or teaches what is required then no one wants to or can play.

You really don't get reenacting do you? I have never seen reenactors bust on people like that. If they have an event, you can't participate unless you have more or less correct stuff. I couldn't tell you about Native stuff, don't go, doesn't interest me. If they're like that, they're wrong. From the I understand most of this native stuff is not about history, but some traditions. Kinda like the sca -- kinda how they imagine it to be

As to shoots, I go to shoot. If I dress up, great, it's a shoot. A reenactment is a different thing. I actually prefer the kind that is closed to the public. Yes, that's my preference. No, it's not elitest or some other bs, we just do our own thing. I'm not here to educate the public.

Everyone has their own thing. No one is insisting that you have a $2000 rifle. Each group is different. Isn't this is the reenactment area? Don't worry, my brother is kind of like that, he got into buckskinning last year after calling reenactors "cosplayers" for years. I enjoy pointing out to him that what he's doing is cosplay in buckskin. And it's alright. Do what you do, but don't expect others to change their rules for you.

That’s the truth. I started in the 70s and was a By God Mountian Man in my Tandy buckskins and tipi, with my flintlock Hawken and a shooting pouch that could double as a three bedroom house.
We sure had fun
And most of us were trying to get it right.

I am really amazed at the aggression shown in these VOLUMES of postings .... in both directions. Life is hard enough these days without getting knickers in a twist.
I hope that I have worked out some basic principles for myself:--
(1) Treat everyone with respect, even if you disagree with what they say or do;
(2) Understand that there will always be people who will want to be in control - and that some will be doing it for self-aggrandisement;
(3) Realise that society has changed -- and that the internet has probably changed people's lives more in the last 10 years than the previous 150 years; it may not be what we want, but it is what we have got ;-(((

If certain Clubs / Organisations / activities have Rules then (a) read them (b) if you are happy to abide by them then (c) take part --- and it NOT, then DON'T --- problem solved without another 18 pages of diatribe.
