I need a new .490 mold. I would prefer a double as opposed to a single cavity, but it's not that important. Does not have to be 'period correct' either. Just need a good quality and durable mold. Lee, Lyman,?

I have a Rapine single cavity scissor mold. It came from www.logcabinshop.com for about $60. Looks exactly like the ones that came with original longrifles. Just wrap the handles with leather so you don't get burned.

First, Rapine is no longer supplying through vendors, but is only a direct seller. Ray offers a variety of molds including square molds with cutters, but he is best known for his steel bag molds which closely resemble originals. These are the type that one supposedly keeps in his shooting bag to be used as needed. They look great and throw a pretty good ball, but do not lend themselves to any serious quantity of casting. Look to block molds and long handles for that.

there is an entry:

Ray Rapine Molds (taking personal orders for various types of molds at (215)679-5413)

I really enjoyed speaking with him and suggest that you consider calling.

Second, Lee and/or Lyman have very similar square block style molds for .50 caliber in single and double cavity. Lee has complete molds, handle and steel sprue cutter. The block is made of aluminum pressed with a ball bearing to attain the shape. Some claim that the stresses will later cause the mold to throw balls that are out of round, but that has never been my experience.

Lyman has a steel mold and also features a sprue cutter, but handles are not included. Being steel blocks, some care must be taken to prevent rust. They are a bit pricey compared to the Lee, but enjoy a very good reputation. These are available from Track, Dixie or a host of others.

Third, Jeff Tanner offers inexpensive brass molds in customs sizes for a very reasonable cost. These have no cutters or handles, but you can come up with handles and you can use a pair of side cutters. I have one and like it, but it is a small caliber that I belatedly learned is best served by shooting 000 buckshot. Live and learn.

There are some pricey gang molds listed on the Links Site that throw 5 or more balls per pour, but I have no experience with these.

I hope that you find something helpful in my ramblings.

Have ordered a Lee two cavity mold. Should be here in a few days. Until I started looking I never knew that so many places existed for BP shooting odd and ends.
