My first muzzleloader should be here this week. I'd really like to take it out for deer season, but am having trouble deciding where to go. For financial reasons I'm limited to public lands. Most of the TPWD and the Corp of Engineer managed lands only allow archery or shotguns for deer. There are a few that allow rifles, but most of them are a long drive from me. Due to my work schedule most of my hunting will have to be day trips, so I'd prefer not to drive 4 hrs to get there. What is the closest public land to the DFW area that allows rifles?

I was limited to public lands for a few years. I hunted the LBJ Grasslands in Wise County. Last couple of years (and this past year in particular) there were so many hunters wandering around I was getting very uncomfortable and have sunk to getting on a lease in East Texas.

I did see deer in the Grasslands, though, and at least one hunter told me he had shot one.

go to:

Texas Parks & Wildlife and search "grasslands" or go to

National Forests and Grasslands.

Good luck.

Caddo National Grasslands Lands isn't bad during the week, especially a couple of weeks into the seaon. Its very pretty too.

Caddo National Grasslands

I've never hunted the Caddo area, but I have scouted around there. It is probably less hunted than the LBJ, just because it is further from the DFW area.

Last year at LBJ, I had scouted a lot before the season and had several good spots in mind. But when I went back to hunt, I was sitting up under an Oak and a group of horsemen came blundering by. One spotted me under the three and kindly advised that the group would be taking up that pasture (several hundred acres) that entire weekend for hunting dog training. So I moved over to another area I had scouted and again set myself up under a tree. Soon, a group of gorillas (actually a group of 12 ga. slug hunters) came slopping around behind, beside and in front of me. One decided he needed to stop and chat with me. Soon, we both heard a crashing in the woods behind us. Along came another group. AARGGGG. Every where I tried, there were folks crashing and stumbling around.

Why once, I sneezed quietly into my bandana, and three voices shouted out "bless you" at the same time.
