It appears that the city of Ft.Worth is making it very difficult for gun shops to stock real black powder like Goex.
If I am going to have to go with a substitute which would be the best choice for a percussion muzzleloader? Cabela's has Triple 7, and are currently out of Pyrodex RS but they usually stock it.

Thanks,
Jim

You can order black powder yourself but I think you have to order 25lbs. Of course they have high shipping and hazmat charges but it is still reasonable if you have a few friends to split up an order.

I live in West Texas and there is no real black powder available within 300 miles. Also I don't know any other black powder shooters so usually I'm between a rock and a hard place. I'm not sure what I would do with 25lbs of powder and I like using fresh powder in hunting season. My choice for alternative powder is Pyrodex Select. I have tried the triple 7 but didn't get the consistancy I have with the select (even though they are made by the same company). Of course that could be just my rifles.

I have a Bass Pro Shop not too far from me, but it is a pain to get to from Ft.Worth.
I thought about ordering, but shipping and the haz-mat fees make me want to find a local dealer or use a substitute.

Graf & Sons sells it in small lots. I order 5-10 pounds at a time. Prices are very reasonable.

But to answer your question. Pyrodex is very popular. I've also heard a lot of good things about Americal Pioneer Powder.

Ain't nothing like the real thing though.

pepperbelly, where in Ft Worth do you live? I live by DFW (Trophy Club). I bought 5 pounds of Swiss from PowerInc. the other day. Worked out well, shipping was real fast and the price (powder, haz mat, shipping) was ok when compared to Cabellas etc.. ~ $23.40 per pound. If I order more in the future, maybe we could split and order? Let me know.

Jim: There are no good Substitute powders. You have several gun clubs around Dallas/Ft.Worth, and you should have no problem finding other ML rifle shooters.

Use and shoot Black Powder. You can order it through the mail from Powder Inc, or Graf & Sons. See the Links section on the index here. Both will ship small quantities of 5-10 lbs. of powder per shipment. A usual case weights 25 lbs, and you do save money buying it by a case. The secret is to find a few other shooters to go together to split the approx. $275.00 cost for the 25 lb order. They will mix powders per order, too. That means you can buy some 2,3,4 and even 1Fg powder in whatever combination you desire, provided the total is 25 lbs. Same when ordering as little as 5 lbs. The HAZ MAT fee is $20.00 per shipment, so you do better by ordering more powder than less, spreading the fee over more pounds of powder. Ex. With a 5 lb. order the Haz Mat fee costs you an extra $4.00 per pound. At 25 lbs. that same fee is now under a dollar per pound($.80). With a 50 lb. order, that is down to $.40 ! And, with the case orders, the two dealers pay the shipping charges. I believe the last comment on this forum from someone who just ordered powder was it cost him about $11.50 per pound delivered to his door. Compare that to $30.00 per pound for Triple 7!

I don't have the latest Muzzleloader Mag on hand lent it to a buddy. I think I saw and Arlington address that claimed they had Schuthzen? powder if they have that they might have Goex also. I'll post the address the next time I see it.
I was going to check it out the next time I was in Ft. Worth to see my outlaws.

I use Pyrodex because it's cheapest(16.00 per lb.). I can't find real bp any closer than 100 miles

I think you might be talking about Scheutzen Inc., they are a big time distributer. They do not sell over the counter to little guys like us. :(

It's all a matter of where you are. When I lived in Ohio, Wally World would put all of their BP stuff on clearance at the end of the season. I would get Pyrodex for $5 a pound. I still have a couple pounds unopened. All I burn is Goex. I bought the Pyro in case a buddy ran out.

Looks to me like you are about a ? hour ? or so from Jackson ? There is a place just south of Jackson that did sell real black powder. If that is within range of you I will find the guys name & address. Go get ya 6-12# and make it worth the trip.

I have used the Pyro 'P' grade in my .50 with fairly good results. Real BP 'FFF' beats it for tightest groups however.

I only use Tripple Seven 2F in all my rifles. No problems, great accuracy, easy clean up. No black powder for sale around here.

For general target shooting and plinking I have found Pyrodex to work well in my TC Hawkin 50 cal.

Jackson is 124 miles. Raymond is the closest place I know for sure that sells it and it is 138 miles. I wish I could afford to buy six lbs. at a time.
