I recently brought a Traditions 1861 J.H. Dance & Brothers in 44 Cal. I have yet to shoot it, however I have been doing a bit a research. Currently the gun uses number 10 caps, however I found some replacement nipples that use number 11 caps.
These nipples seam like a good idea, since my only other BP gun uses number 11 caps. So I would only have to stock number 11 caps.

My question is what is the difference between number 10 and number 11 caps? I tried some number 11 caps and they did not fit firmly on the nipples (meant for number 10 caps).

Do you guys think it is worth it to try out these nipples? Have you ever tried these??

What nipples are they?

Do you have any calipers? measure the width of the nipples and then do a search for "percussion cap sizes" on google there is a little chart with the 4-5 major brand sizes.

Wich 10s have you tried?

I think they only way you will be able to find out wich you like best is just to try them all.

When i first started i had to figure it out myself i tried remington #10 and 11 and #11 CCI and some i found at walmart #11 winchester.

I used them all if they were loose i pinched them. I found Remington #10s to fit all my guns the best.

I'm dumber than most, but in my mind I have thought about this same issue and have concluded the following: I have 5 revolvers,3 single shot pistols and 4 long guns that have nipples. The rifles and single shots all use #11nips and the revolvers all use # 10's.
If I changed all the revolvers to 11's that would cost me way north of a hunnert bucks!
For that kind of dough I guess I can stock both 10's and 11 nipples.
Just my opinion. Take it for what it's worth

With that many guns, nipple conversion could cost a bit. One advantage to leaving them as a mix of #10 & #11 is that if you have trouble finding one size, you can still shoot the other guns.

I've got a generous handful of revolvers, both Colts and Remingtons, that I was able to remove all nipples, dump them all into a pile, measure and sort. I was able to assemble several with like-sized nipples, and they all work fine with # 10's, either Remington or CCI.

For the ROA, and Dragoon, I got sets of Treso Ampco nipples that use #11 caps. I didn't have enough sorted and sized alike to fit a set of 1858's, so they are also fitted with Treso/Ampco's, too.

If you have enough revolvers, you may be able to sort nipples by size to get matched sets. Otherwise, you can't go wrong with the Ampco's. They aren't finicky and #11 CCI's and Remingtons both work fine.

I agree i think the #10 remingtons are the best. They are so tall they seem to just adjust themself to the nipple. All the others seem to small or to short to fit at the right point on the nipple.

Now i had one newer gun i got at a gun show last month and the nipple were a bit big for the #10s so i just put each nipple into a drill and filed them down till they fit good.

The problem i see with dumping all the nipples into a pile and then sorting them by fit is most of the nipples on all the guns i have are all different. It may not matter but some have smaller or larger holes and some have a different shape at the spout. SOme are more flat some are more rounded. This may not matter i dont know but ide rather them all match.

There was a discussion about caps on another forum jsut a few weeks ago.

Here is a few images. If you notice the Remington #10 how deep it is and how it has those little wings that flair out when they snug up.

Now look at the nipple examples, you see the black one how its sort of cone shaped? I think most revolver nipples are like this and since the Remington #10s are so deep they slip down till they reach a spot on the nipple where its wide enough that it fits tight. The reason why they dont have missfires like other nipples that fit tight are those little wings. They are designed to split and when they split they slip down on the nipple till they bottom out and fire. I think this is also one reason they fragment so easy also.

This is just my opinion though.

Guess I'd better clarify some - all nipples of Like Style were put together in a bin. I measured and sorted enough to fit a couple of Remington cylinders, then went on to a separate batch for some Colt's and matched another set.

What I'm left with will allow me to, as time and inclination permits, to measure and turn down more to produce more matched sets of more uniform quality.

If the OP wants to send me a PM with your address i can drop about 6 of each of these caps into an envelope and mail em to you to try.

(do percussion caps need a hazmat fee?)

Yes a haz mat fee. Everytime I buy a 1000 it costs me $27 extra.

Plus I would be afraid that envelope with those caps in it might be subjected to a dough roller do-hickey at a USPS terminal. I could see everyone hitting the floor when the caps go off. Don't put a return address on it and get any fingerprints on the envelope LOL.

I could poke holes in cardboard and push the caps into the little holes they should make it.
