OK, I'll be going to a cowboy match next Saturday and I will be shooting my Pietta 1858s and 1862 "Army Police", all three .36 C&B. The only powders I have at hand are Pyrodex RS and Goex 2F, OK I have 4F too but I know not to use it. Has anyone tried RS or 2F out of .36 C&B with decent results? I am looking at 18-20 grain (or the same volume) loads with wonder wads and .375 balls.
Thanks in advance.

i used 2f when i could not get 3f. it worked ok in fact the old layman loading manual has loads listed for both 2 and 3f. 2f makes the guns get dry quicker.

I have had goo luck with APp 3 f 25gr and RB easy to clean and good accuracy. You can shoot several cylinders with out cleaning. It cleans up great wit water or alcohol

If 2F is what you have that is what I would use and just up the charge to whatever you can get in the cylinder and still seat your balls and wads. Sometimes you have to run what you brung.

Well, the 2F worked fine. There were 5 stages (25 shots from each pistol) and I didn't have any issues with them locking up or problems rotating. I did put bore butter on the cylinder pins before the match and once during the match. I shot a Remington 1858 Navy and a 1862 "Army Police" (basically a cut down 1861), both Piettas. I used 20 grains of 2F, a wonder wad, .375 balls, and Remington #10 caps from a straight Ted Cash capper. I preloaded my powder in the "speedloaders" that Dixie sells that seal with the round ball, they worked great. The capper was hot and cold, it worked on both revolvers fine (I did use a wood dowel to make sure the caps were seated) but every now and then when I put the cap on a nipple the next cap turned on it's side jamming up the capper. I may just pick up a couple more cappers and preload them as backups at matches.
I did have a problem at the end of the match with my 1862, on stage 4 I had what I thought was a bad cap (two hammer hits) but then I was in such a rush to shoot the next stage I just recapped the same nipple and left that load in the chamber. Same thing happened on stage 5. After the match I swapped out that nipple but it wouldn't fire with a different nipple either. I'll be tearing the guns down in a couple minutes (waiting for the wife to get out of the kitchen) and hope to get to the bottom of this.
As this was a SASS match the targets were close and I didn't use the sights so I can't speak to accuracy differences (I only missed one shot and I haven't shot one handed for a long time so I'm happy with that) but the Colt sure fit my hand better, I had to regrip the Remington while shooting a couple times.
I guess that's about it, thanks again!

Sounds like you had a good time even with the missed fires. :hatsoff: I told you that 2F would work if that was all you had.
