Hello,

Im having a really hard time deciding what gun i want to buy. I know that I want a .40 cal custom flintlock. I found one at TVM that is already built and I recently had found one up at Log Cabin Shop. This is the gun from TVM which is brand new. .40 cal flinter L n R lock. $950.

Here is the gun from log cabin. it also has a L n R lock and i really like the sights on it and when i hald it up it feels really good in my hands.I like the look of the darker stock and barrel.I would be supporting local buisness and if any thing happened to it i know 100 percent that log would take care of it and fix it for me.

The main reason im having trouble deciding is because there the same price after tax.

Tell me what you think you would decide if you were me?

Seems you have answered your own question ... almost. The local Log Cabin rifle has fit, feel, sights, looks and same lock for the same price. So only question is if there is any difference in barrel quality.

For PRBs look for rifling .010" or greater deep and a twist of 1:48 to 1:66. I have three .40s all with Douglas 1:66 twist barrels that are VERY accurate.

Enjoy! Sweetie, my .40 flint SMR, is my go to gun.

Well I have been to the log cabin shop at least a dozen times. Pretty good trick for living in Maine. As how that gun at LCS you liked the way that it fits, looks and no waiting. As the TVM rifle get it home.Don't like the way it fits. Then deal with trying to return it.
My vote is for the LCS rifle.
P.S. If you have ever been to the lcs when there was a tractor trailer in the yard.Good chance it was me.

Sounds like the LCS gun spoke to you... listen to her and take her home

I think the TVM had a Chambers Lg siler lock.
I can't tell for sure.
Just for that reason Chambers vs L@R I would get the TVM. You won't be disapointed ever with TVM and Chambers locks are quicker, better builtand tuned properly and that is a must for consistant fast inginition.
Also TVM is a better built rifle.
And if there is any problem(which I doubt)Tonie at TVM will bend over backwards to make it right.
I own eight TVM's and only had to send one back because it was damaged during shipping(UPS's falt)
TVM had me a new gun in less than a month. Pritty fast considering it takes a year to get a new one.
And hey buying from Matt and Toni is like shopping local, they are real folks who look out for their customer's best interest. and even tho it may not be in your town their guns and parts are all made here in the grand ol US of A.
I would go TVM

I would go with TVM, too. Been there, love the people, quality and service! I also agree with the Chambers lock. Flinters can be picky beasts unless proper tuning is done.

my thinking is if find one that feels good like the sites thats the to buy and you can shoot it that day over a bunch of unkown not saying its a bad rifle at TVM just a lot questions
for me be easy choice i prefer single trigger
over double set
yes i owned a TVM rifle and its very good so this is no knock on them but i chenged the sites but that was my choice

I would probably go with the LCS gun just on the fact that you like the way it feels, the sights, etc. . . however like others have said the Chambers lock is a better lock than the L&R. Good luck with your choise and keep us posted

No worries,I coulden't read it.
I guess it dosen't matter then, just make sure you send that L@R lock off to L.C. Rice to have it tuned properly.
L.C. Rice started L@R and will be the first to tell you that L@R quality has gone way down hill as of late.
He will tune it replace main and frizzin spring if need be even retemper you're frizzin if it's soft like so many of them are coming out of the factory now a days.
He had to completly rebuild my Queens anns lock even after I replaces both springs.
L@R needs to be bought out by sombody who has a passion for flintlocks.
Nothing worse than a new flintlock shooter with a faulty(slow) lock.
Getting discouraged is easy with hang fires or klatches.

You must of told me or even PM'd me, but apparently you sent your locks to him? I forget more than I know anymore. Anyhow, it was worth the effort wasn't it. The last 4 L&R locks I used, I didn't even try them out. I just sent them in had them tuned. Now they work as you should expect a lock to work. But, in defense of L&R, a year ago I had a problem with a lock that took place on the opening day of gun season. The lock would slip out of full **** and fired and it scared the heck out of me. I and other locals looked and looked, to see what was wrong and couldn't find a thing. After a day of not hunting and trying to figure out the lock, I called L&R and they said to send it to them at L&R. It was returned so fast, I swear they must have had the mailman wait on it. The sear spring had a crack in it, that we missed. I was back hunting in 4 days from the opener. No charge and fast. Not the same way it was nearly 10yrs. ago.

I just got off the phone with MR Rice, yup I think any new lock I get will be sent off to L.C. before I even shoot it.

That's what I would do, I built a rifle with a l&R manton lock and man did it take a ton of tuning to get it right, I'd just send it to rice if I had it to do over again.
