Has anyone ever seen an historical piece either pistol or longgun where the wood was not stained only oiled or finished giving it the "blond" look? I built a my first gun years ago (pistol kit) and left it blond not knowing any better. It looks kinda neat but I've always wondered if I should have or still should go back and stain it.

 Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Give it a try or keep it . It will shoot the same.

I have handled original Queen Anne(1740)pistol's and a Indian trade rifle smoothbore marked for Chalston,SC (1770's)in my father's collection. They were obtained in the UK @ a market day sale 20 years ago(cost 5&15 poundnote!).The metal had a armours patina due to age-originally white metalbare. The wood was not stained, but the oil had aged a dark chocolate after 200 some years.Another example is swedish M96 mausers made prior to WWII were originally yellow stock, but with age the Oil finish has darken to a brown state.
