I have a Dave Motto early english fowler, not sure how to desribe it but it has the fitted brass buttplate that is inletted into the stock on the top where your cheek goes. I need the stock cut down and then the same buttplate re-attached, do any of you guys know of someone who can do this? the stock is made of walnut,, these are all I have for pics right now, its the gun on the top.

There are several excellent gun builders here on the forum. I'm sure you will get some great advise. If not, you can send it to me and after I wear it down to the length you need, I'll send it back :rotf: . Nice gun.

I shortened one simular to that one time. I will say that it was my first & last such undertaking. Basically the buttplate has to be decreased in size as you move it forward along with fitting it to the stock. It would take devine intervention to pull this all off without refinishing the gun.

Man, it's your piece to do with as you wish, but I'd think real hard about taking a saw to a very, very nice firearm. :hmm:

Then I'd probably decide not to. Having it done right will cost you an arm, and the value the piece loses will cost you a leg - and it's tough to enjoy your status thus dismembered, despite the Black Knight's protestations to the contrary. :shake:

Better you sell or trade it for one that fits you, rather than "shorten" its future attractiveness and value for generations yet to embrace its charms. Just my sentimental 2 cents... :nono:

How much of the stock do you want taken off? Have you considered having it restocked, so that the existing stock and buttplate can remain as is, for future sale of the gun?

The difficulty here is that Buttplate- which curls up and over the top of the heel of the stock. If you cut that wood shorter, there is NO Way you can restore that wood and reattach that buttplate to its original position. If that is not being considered( GOOD!) the inletting work needed to move that buttplate forward is going to take time, and money, making this a much more expensive "re-model" than what a gunsmith would normal charge to cut the stock, and say, put a recoil pad on it. Then there is the filing of the buttplate to fit the narrow wood that has to be done. That adds time and cost.

That gun has a long wrist. Do a mockup of the length you need and stand back and look at the gun. If you take off to much, the symetry will be gone and you can't get it back. Longrifles are a true piece of art with graceful forms.

fwiw, i agree with swamprat... the expense, aggravation, and damage you'd do to the underlying architecture of the old gun will be pretty steep, and in the end i think you'd make out better with an entirely new piece rather than trying to "fix" the old one.

You shouldn't have much trouble selling a Dave Motto fowler for enough money to get a nice custom fitted gun made for you. Shortening the pull on that gun is almost a sacrilege! :nono:
