Been a great week for Flintlocks so far...shot 50 .490's on Saturday, 50 on Monday, 50 on Wednesday, and will shoot 50 in the morning...up at 5:30am, shooting by 7:00, home by 9:00 out of the heat and humidity cleaning the rifle...life is good!!
:thumbsup:

'Cheapsot' cast ball = .05
Southern Bloomer pill tick patch = .01
50grns Goex = .07
.13 / shot x 50 shots = $6.50 for a 50 shot range session...(costs twice that much just for round trip gas)

Hope a lot of you make smoke this weekend!

I will be taking a T/C out of the cabinet, burning some Goex, and hurling lead downrange this weekend. I look foward to this each week. Hopefully the weather will cooperate. :grin:

Luckily, where I shoot there's a little pole shelter over the bench so I shoot rain or shine...it's actually better when it's raining cause there's no worry about anybody else showing up;
:grin:

In this heat & humidity I take a 22" window fan and set it behind me, blowing right on me;

In the winter, I take a 20lb propane tank with a radiant heater/reflector on it...warm as toast;

Roundball,
I been thinking on heading out to the range in the morning with the Flintlock and slinging some lead.Blackflies are numerous here now and the weather is wet and humid,perfect weather for them too.I'll think I'll tough it out though and give it a try.

I'm going to take my work in progress underhammer out in the morning to shoot.

Then I got to return "Underhammer Guns" that I got via interlibrary loan.

Then, maybe I will cut the grass.

I'm always envious of folks with Saturdays off. :( Wednesdays, on the otherhand, are good for 45 .535's downrange. :)

Heck, don't be envious of Saturdays...I'd rather have a weekday off anytime :winking:

Been shooting my 32 this week.....also got the 36 Buggy out today and run several shots thru it.

I have some .725 balls cast up for the 12ga. rifle, and may do some blasting with the tomorrow. :shocked2:

I plan on it. I've been Mr. Mom for a week while the Mrs. went to Texas to find us a house.
I'm shooting Sunday for sure.

Our club shoot at the Brushy Creek Muzzle Loaders is this Sunday. My heart says shoot but I don't know whether my head can stand the 97 degree heat. I bet I'll be shooten...!

Yeah, unless you're under cover and have some air moving on you it's not very enjoyable...particularly when the humidity is also up in the 90's...if I couldn't shoot right at first light during June/July/August I probably wouldn't go...but you can't do that with a scheduled event.

Don't know if you've ever tried them but something that works great is a thing you can wear around your neck called a "cooldana".

A tubular bandana (neck scarf) with a few kernels of some sort of chemical loose inside them...soak it in a pail of cold water for 10 minutes and those thing swell up inside the cloth so big the whole scarf looks like a giant sausage...and it's cold...you wear it around your neck and all the blood flowing up and down the carotid arteries to the head is cooled, keeping you amazingly cool during hot weather.

I guess I should come clean about my sins... I bought a Jarrett "Beanfield" rifle and I'm gonna sight it in this weekend. I'm going out west this fall for elk and thought I better have a rifle along beside my flintlock.

No 'lektricity, where I shoot, fer runnin' a fan, so I hafta dip up a measure of spring water when it gits too hot fer shootin'. :thumbsup:

I can hope! Put a new front sight on the .54 over a month ago and STILL haven't had a day calm enough to get it sighted in. Spent a few nights out at the ranch rolling up shot cartridges for the 20 ga. Might get that one out in the next week or so.

What a terrific morning...thunderstorms all during the night...dark, overcast, and foggy at first light...cooler in the 60's...saw a flock of Turkeys feeding in a small field...then 4 does in another field.

Put another 50 "Cheapshot" .490s through a flinter at 50yds using 50grns Goex 3F and .015" Oxyoke prelubed patches...thumbstarted nicely compared to .018" p/t I'd been using...that's a total of 200 Cheapshot balls I've used and they're proving to be excellent for my weekend shooting...outstanding morning all the way around.
:thumbsup:

Our public range is covered and has numerous paddle fans that help keep things tolerable even when temps are in the 90s. 30+ rifle stations with 50 and 100 yard target stands. The Sells Tennessee .54 flintlock is due to be completed in a few weeks. Can't wait!

Hey Roundball, when are you going to put some round balls thruogh that .62 smoothbore with the jug choke to see how it shoots them now? Interested parties are awaiting your range report on it. :grin:

I already posted that I ran a handful through it, seems to work perfectly...
80grns Goex 2F
Oxyoke wad
Oxyoke .015" prelubed cotton
TOW (Rush Creek) .595

I'll have to actually zero it later this summer if I decide to deer hunt with it...but right now it's set for Turkey hunting and I'm not sure I'll bother changing it for deer this year...have used the larger .54 and .58 calibers a lot the past couple seasons, and right now I'm leaning towards dragging out the smaller .45cal & .50cal Flinters again this year

I shot a few targets this morning but by noon it was too hot to shoot. Range didn't open until 9:00 a.m. Woulda been nice to start at 7 and end by 9 or 10 instead.

Well I'm headed out to the shade trees to clean the barrel.
