I just got Dutch's system and am in the works of pre-lubing a variety of patches to see what works. I have bought several different patching material in different sizes and have washed them. I need to know how wide to cut my strips of material so the ball is sufficiently covered when cutting my patch at the muzzle. My gun is a .54 cal plains style rifle.

I'm trying to find out how wide to cut the patching strips though. I don't want to cut them too wide and waste a lot of material.

Using my method for calculating a patch diameter, I get 1.39" for a .54.

As this size would pull all of the material down into the bore "just flush" with the muzzle all around the bore I think it would be too narrow for a patch strip that was going to be "cut flush" with the muzzle.

If I was going to make a "patch strip" for my .54's I would make it about 1 1/2" wide.

I go 1 1/2",, splitting the difference for a 1/4-1/8 isn't really that big a gainer.
And I rip the material,, that way a few edge strands can be easily pulled from the length each side,, if you cut it you get all these little threads spread around everywhere

Idealy when the patching is cut at the muzzle after the patched ball is pushed just below the face of the muzzle you will have perfect patch forming a nice belt around the ball with no excess fabric to get in the way, deflecting the flight of the ball.

I've seenpeople firing patched balls that were almost wrapped as it should be BUT with a half inch of excess cloth in front of the ball. I doubt if there was much accuracy involved

I think to err on the "fat side" a width of 1-1/2" would work well, give you some extra to center the ball and have some material to hold on to so you don't cut your hand or fingers. If you think you are wasting material or money and "shoot for the smallest width of material that is false economy :v
