I read a book a long time ago where the hunters/pioneers "cut some wiping sticks" to have extras on hand before crossing the plains, where trees were mighty scarce. Not sure if they were used as ramrods or just for bore cleaning.
 
Now that you're back, I gotta know: Is "TDM" your initials, or is it a play on the word "tedium"? You're a carver so I can see "tedium" being apt, as there is much of it in woodcarving and engraving.
