I'm probably a little too excited about winning this auction:

But.......I'm just thinking about all the practice I'm going to get building horns.

I'm thinking that I won't have to call around the one or two shops here in town asking about cattle horns only to drive across town to find that the ones they have are the wrong color, wrong shape, ugly and way overpriced! As in $15.00 ea. overpriced! :cursing:

If I were to explain how happy I am about getting this lot of horns to any modern person, chances are they would question my sanity.
I figured I would share my excitement with those of you who understand.

I'll be sure to post pics of horns as I finish them

take care everyone

Iain

Congrats on the win. At $5.90 each you didn't do bad at all. We should be able to smell the progress of your work clear down here in Sutherlin with that many horns being worked on. What i meant by that is not that your work stinks but that the horns do when you are grinding and drilling on them. Just like antlers. Have fun with your new Treasures.

Iain,
Great buy!
I am anxious to see what you build with them. Your earlier pics here on the forum were great pieces of work. Still going to have to get one from you someday!

Enjoy,
Brett

Hi; Check with the meat people and find who buys dead cows or butchures them , I used to get messy smelly ones by the burlap sack. An ant hill will clean horns out nice ,they work for free. Bob

Yeah

I did make a few calls to butchers in my area, and none of them seemed to recall ever having horns in their shops as they normally would get whole sides in from the slaughterhouse.

I also don't like doing a whole lot of scraping and finishing, I prefer to start with a clean horn so all of my time and effort will be directed towards engrailing, strap groove, carving flats, scrimshaw etc etc
It's worth it to me to pay a few extra bucks for a polished horn
