Woods Walk Targets

We just wrapped up our 2021 Standing Stone Muzzleloaders shoot yesterday.
I want to make and add some new targets for next year.

We currently have a couple that are fun that are pretty easy to miss.
1 being a cut out of a spoked wheel... Plenty of spots for a ball to go through without contact.
The other difficult one is a steel deer but it's got a cut out of a 4" circle behind the shoulder and there's a orange plate behind it you will hit if you shoot through the hole.

I may make a turtle, and a rabbit.
Any ideas? Photos would be great.

I welded a length of chain to an old disk blade so it would hang like an umbrella and about 8" of chain hung below. A 2" trailer hitch ball was welded to the chain that hung below the disk. The object is to shoot the ball and make it swing up and ring the disk. It's challenging but it can be done and it really rings loud.

The RSO/RM in me says that shooting a round object at another round object ain't one of the best ideas but I get it.

It wouldn't hurt to have a tall backstop just in case. My backstop is a bluff about 100 feet tall. Or place the target low to the ground and close to the backstop.

My favorite is the axe bullet split. You put clay pigeons on either side of an axe head. Break both to win.

We have that one, that's the one that gets me! I was 10 for 10 till I got to the axe head. It d target #11 out of 12. I got one clay bird, then I missed the last target. Still shot my best round 10 out of 12.

We like to shoot biodegradable at our woods walks. We use charcoal briquets, potatoes, loli pops, necco wafers,Clay birds, carrots and pumpkins/squash at the longer ranges.

As Grimord has said, some of the most enjoyable targets are those that are a bit different. Such as your biodegradable ones. From a 2x4 hang charcoal briquettes from a length of string. Again a 2x4 nails on top and push a potato on. Hit with a round ball they literally explode, looks very impressive. Always remember the name of this game is to have fun.

I put together a woodswalk a couple of years ago. A couple of things I set up:
1. William Tell - stand a log upright, staple a picture ( I used Kim Jong whatshisname), put an apple on top of the log. +2 if you hit the apple, -1 if you shoot Kim. (one guy shot Kim on purpose, said it was worth losing a point.
2. Bowling - Stand a log upright, drill top and insert golf tees in a bowling pin pattern, top each tee with a golf ball. +1 for each ball knocked off.
3. Nailing it - Board with long roofing nails driven in halfway. +1 if you hit a nail, +2 if you drive it in all the way
4. Shoot the Wabbit- Roll a softball (or if windy use a balloon), draw a line ten yards out, once the Wabbit passes the line, shoot. +1 for hitting the Wabbit.

I've shot a lot of matches over the years and some clubs get pretty inventive with their targets. The ones I remember best are a turkey neck and head steel that ran down the length of a log on a slopped track. The best by far was a 55-gallon barrel mounted on springs that had a saddle strapped to it, you had to sit on this thing and fire at a target behind you as if you're being chased on horseback.

I don’t have any pictures but 2 of the woods walks i shoot at have….moon, star, animals, fish, chain hook, metal pipe, gongs, etc. You can make them small for closer shots or bigger for farther shots. Sky’s the limits. Next month i’ll send you pictures of targets for ideas.
