Locks were either left in the white or case hardened and polished back, then left to develop a patina. They were not rust browned like many do today.
SDS caught on ,I wrote in plain English viz locks where not Browned inside or out the browning by rusting is a 20c notion Not historically supportable other than by neglect . try that.

It may have been English, but it wasn’t plain. My immigrant wife’s broken English is more plain English.
