Been having a hard time seeing my open sights these days. Figured I would do a little Appalachian engineering on my White Mountain Carbine's front sight.
First off, I flattened the top of my sight with a flat file. After that, I cut a V notch to cradle a .04 fiber optic rod. Got the green fiber optic rod held in with Krazy Glue Gel. Also painted my rear sight "white" to pick better in low light situations. So far, so good.
May end up installing a Lyman peep rear sight sometime soon as well. IMG_4424.jpegIMG_4426.jpegIMG_4428.jpegIMG_4430.jpegIMG_4430.jpegIMG_4431.jpeg

You do whatever works. I've had a rifle with a steel blade front and a High Viz of the same height that I interchanged depending on if I was hunting in dim light or shooting in a match on a sunny day. Some kind of a peep rear sight with a big ol' hole in it does wonders for old eyes too.

Over the last twenty yrs. I've gone through the various stages of not being able to properly see Iron sights on my longrifles. First for me was....move the rear sight foreward a bit like the old timers did. Worked ok 'til I couldn't see the front or rear sight plain enought to shoot. I'm to the point , I installed a modified Johnson peep sight on the tang of my flint deer rifle. Problem solved. Now I can see target , front sight , and peep does it's job perfectly. My final problem is I'm just too old to hunt any more. I spend too much time on the ground. Can't shoot in competition any more , but that's ok. I'll just go to the range and bust some paper.
