IS THIS A SAFE SHOOTING BARREL?

We're probably going to need some photos, and you will likely need to get an inexpensive endoscope that fits your phone for an internal check

THANKS FOR YOUR RESPONSE. THE QUESTION WAS DID ANYBODY KNOW THE REPUTATION OF THAT BARREL MAKER "OL REALIABLE" AS TO ANY SHOOTING INFORMATION ESPECIALLY THEIR SAFETY RECORD. I WAS UNABLE TO FIND ANY INFORMATION ON THEM. THE OTHER FLINTLOCK HAD AN OLDER DOUGLAS BARREL AND I FOUND A LOT OF INFORMATION ON IT. BEST REGARDS

The barrel maker is NOT old reliable. Pull the barrel, and it should be marked with the manufacturer.
Probably something the builder decided to name the gun. JAM is also probably the initials of the builder.

Just looking at the general work of the gun I’ve no doubt it’s safe to shoot
It’s not hard to pull the barrel and set off a charge to test if your feeling unsafe

I’d have no reservations about shooting that rifle. I’d make sure the barrel is unloaded, clean it, check the lock for spark and have some fun.

It looks like a shooter to me. If you have any doubts, load it up with a hefty charge, tie it down to an old tire and pull the trigger with a long string while you hide behind a convenient tree. And please, quit using capitols, IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU'RE YELLING!

Looks like a nice gun. Do you know how to remove the barrel from the stock to look for manufacture’s marks? If not let us know.

New guy in his late 70s… Maybe hard of hearing and needs to shout. Lighten up, he just joined this afternoon.

The guy who built that very nice rifle would not have skimped on the barrel. I would definitely shoot it.

Ol Reliable”Old reliable” was the nickname given to the
‘74 Sharps rifles. I’m guessing someone just liked the nickname ?
Clean the bore….then run a snug patch down the bore feeling for sudden loose spots etc. As dtated s bore light would be helpful.

looking at the bore at the muzzle, adding the flared tang, i would guess the barrel is a rice or maybe a green mountain.
from the quality of construction i wouldn't give it even a passing doubt as being safe.
if you do dismount the barrel check aft close to the breech for the manufacturers name or symbol.
Rice barrels have a capitol R with a long sweeping front leg.
Green Mountain barrels are marked with what looks like an M within a circle. its not an m but renderings of mountain peaks.
Colrain will be spelled out.
generally they all include the rate of twist in the same area.
GR Douglas marked his barrels on the top, but quit making muzzleloader barrels years ago, though they still show up occasionally. Also I don't think your rifle is that old to have one.
heck, if you are wary of shooting it, send it to me. I will shoot it for a couple years and send it back when satisfied it won't blow up on ya.

That lock looks like it could be a Doc Haddaway, or possible a Bob Roller lock.
I think Bob still checks in on ALR site. could show him a pic or just take the lock out and check.
will say Roller or RR. Hadaway will have a circle with a z, and a cross hatch thru the z.
used my last Hadaway on a cherry half stock build and my wife high graded it. won't even let me shoot it!
hope this gives you some hay to chew and that is a rifle to be proud of.

I don’t know nothing and I’d shoot that. Make sure you only use real blackpowder like Goex, not modern gun powder.

What’s the problem, looks fine clean load and shoot start with a 50 or 60 grain charge of 2 or 3 F black powder and work from there at fifty yards.

Looks like a pretty nice rifle. Make sure it doesn't already have a load in it before you load it. pointed in a safe direction, prime the pan and spark it off to make sure it doesn't fire from someone leaving it loaded. It's also pretty easy to see if there's a load already in it by using the ramrod to see how far down the barrel it will go. Put the ramrod in all the way, grab it at the muzzle and then lay it beside the barrel. If it reaches all the way to the touch hole, you can be reasonably certain it isn't loaded.

All of those are marking done by the maker or the person who bought the rifle.
Look for a stamped symbol near the breech. It may not have one. So you are likely not going to be able to say what brand of barrel is on the rifle. So you won't be able to add to a description of the rifle if resale is your objective, but..., some folks like the mystery of the barrel maker as they think they got a bargain. Image of the condition of the interior of the barrel will help you if again, resale is your objective.

It is a nice looking rifle. I'd shoot it.

Rifle name , year made , 16th. rifle made that year , serial number ? , makers initials ??
That is how I would look at that information.
After looking at the added pictures , was stamped on the barrel the rest was etched in later.
It is a nice looking rifle. I'd shoot it.
