I got me a neat little project. Hopkins and Allen .36 Underhammer. It had some surface rust so I steamed it and converted the rust. It looks ok, but not great. I think I will Cerakote the barrel with Plum Brown, and do the hammer and trigger in Graphite black. I have a nice piece of maple left over so I will use that for the grip. It had a nipple that takes a much larger cap than a #11, I want to change that. TOTW has a nipple listed for Numrich arms, but it says it has a .470 cone length, that seems awfully long, I will have to research more. I am excited about this little piece, stay tuned.

I had to buy one of their extended nipples for my H&A match rifle. It doubles as the nut for attaching my flash guard.

I have heard that Numrich used Thompson SMG grips on their Underhammer pistols. I just happen to have a wooden Thompson mock up in the shop. Yes, I think the grip would work, but I think I could make something a little more pleasing to the eye.

After ruining my good piece of maple, I used some walnut I had left over. I will also do another grip in maple. It is about as easy to make two. Inletting done, now just cut away everything that doesn’t look like a grip.

Nice. Oner of my first muzzleloaders was a Hopkins Allen .36 underhammer. I remember trying to coon hunt with it, and learning quickly, that I had to make each shot count.
