What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Finally, after being out of commission due to covid, vertigo, and "old" for the past two months I was able to start shooting again and competed in our little BP monthly competition. Good to be back with old shooting buddies.

I enjoyed a round of shooting at the local Townsville Range today; only the second day of spring but felt like summer. I shot two targets, benched at 50 metres using the 1858 two band PH Enfield; the first target I engaged with .570 patched round balls, the second with a small version of the minie, 320gn Lyman wadcutter style, both projectiles with Wano FFFG. I used the first target, round ball, to go to school on sight settings and aim point, so that's why I suspect the second target ended up looking a little tighter - that minie sure cuts a beautiful hole. The two band offers an enjoyable rifled musket experience either hunting or at the range, accuracy acceptable for both.

Yep, not the certified load and musketry good form, I accept.

Every day I get better and better at 40 yards

This week end was the NY ML associations fall shoot at the Oxford Rod and Gun club...always a fun time. I sure wish more folks participated though. I shot very mediocre, using my Lyman .50 GPR and KIbler .58 Colonial, which hadnt seen light in two years. The shoot runs over three days labor day week end...monday through sunday. One of these times I hope to stick around through the woods walk, never having done one. It is at the end of the day, and after about six hrs of steady shooting, I am pooped. And a wee bit grimy.

I went to a local RDV to sell some of my extra stuff Had a good day, sold my Patterson and my Hartford New Model 1858 Remington. lots of little stuff

Yesterday pulled the lock off the Kibler Colonial and got around to finishing it. Used Jax metal black. Also pulled the barrel so I could and some wipe on poly over the oil finish.

Shot the Hopkins & Allen Heritage Model .45 caliber underhammer that my late father bought in 1970 and gave to me in 1981. I recently put open sights on it to use in woods walks.



I used one of Dad's knives as a patch knife.



The .440 RBs I shot were really tight so I've ordered some .433s to see if they shoot accurately. They should be easier to load when shooting from the pouch.

Shot Kibler Colonial .58 cal smoothbore at 50 yd range, mainly to try shooting with bipod shooting stick. Sorry, no pics, iPad battery was too low to take along with. Also to try out some different wadding materials, eg dryer lint for one, as suggested in recent YouTube video by Black Powder Maniac shooter, and you know what, that worked pretty good!!

Shooting stick conclusions: 1) bipod stick far superior to monopod; 2) supporting the forearm farther forward to put the firearm's balance point behind the stick support also superior to support at the balance point - in fact, a good position for stick support is where offhand arm is almost fully extended, with just a little bit of flex at the elbow.

‘Twas yesterday, not today. I visited a friend who is a gun nut, albeit modern guns. He has almost every type of modern gun made. His only experience with muzzleloaders is deer hunting with the modern plastic type using substitute powder. Until yesterday, he’d never shot or even held a flintlock.

So, I took a couple flintlocks to show and let him shoot the Chambers .62 caliber smooth rifle. He was amazed about several things concerning the flintlock.

First, he admired all the hand made accoutrements. There was nothing plastic or nylon and the only items store bought were gun and powder.

He was also amazed that the gun was so balanced and shouldered so smoothly.

I loaded the gun with 65 grains of 2f and a .600 caliber round ball wadded with tow. Primed with the same powder. He was expecting a lot of recoil and was very surprised that there wasn’t. The smile on his face was priceless.

There's some photos of his excellent guns ,on google , but little else , but the barrel and the action have a fancy motive on it., with him as maker One of his fancy rifles sold for over $20k

Getting used to it but it’s not as bad as an ugly woman . It’s a beautiful ladies rifle if you ask me . Happy to sell it for £1800 around 1835 The hammer shape now sits well with me

The set trigger works if you pull it tight against the wood trigger guard There’s an adjustment screw , indeed I let off a few pistol size caps .

The bore is more like .505 and a •490 ball with some thickish patch material is fine Add to that a good bore and around 1/46 twist , deepish 7 groove rifling . 23” long carbine barrel. “Real bullets” would tumble . But a .490 ball will kill most things , elk and bear. Ask Tommy

Cannot budge the ram rod , but it’s common to have frozen ramrods on old guns , need to take off barrel , but not today

The barrel is held by a screw tang , probably down into wood trigger guard , so not a quick removal job,

Not sure if I chose wisely , but I really wanted it and it makes me happy Always another auction , that will piss wife Joan off But what the duck money just sitting in bank.

Got a friend out on the range yesterday. He shot my .62 FDC and my Frontier .32 rifle. He did very well at 50 yards off the bench.
He's bit, we're looking at affordable options for him.

He was a regular contributor here on this thread, but his posts stopped on July 30th. I’m getting a little worried about him, and miss his postings.

I sent him a PM a few days ago and also sent him my email address in case a family member intercepted the notifications and could email me back with any news.

Just concerned…

Maybe he bought a tropical island and just dropped off the grid. I dunno…

Ive been stalking his posts also to see if there was some indication of his status. I was gone for a while too and as far as the PM, you beat me to the punch.

I hope he is okay and just busy.

My wife has suffered with vertigo, from the Colvid vaccines, it causes calcium deposit in the ears one of many unpleasant side effects, but here in UK so many have died without it. We both got Colvid last year but it was mild flue by then. We wish you well

Went out to the range yesterday and shot my 58 long rifle. Took me a few shots to settle down and remember how to squeeze. Learned more about my rifle. A pair of bald eagles soared over head tree top high. My range is on the Platte river adjacent to an original frontier fort. It's muzzleloader and prb only club. It's been a crazy busy summer and I haven't been able to get out and shoot. I drove home with a smile on my face. Today everything seems better.

It's amazing, good trade!

On another note my £14 new 11/16” thread taps arrive . Put a tap in lathe chuck and muzzle in revolving centre, I can tell you it was hard work pulling chuck around by hand . I guess next is to cut the lumps of the 28bore barrels , then sand off the flats . Just slow steady work do hope the barrels finally fit my .36 percussion double rifle , ml
Of course Barrels are new in the white , made unknown , but chopper lump barrels and steel . Holts uk auction £260 must be mad.

Put a new touch hole liner in my GPR Flinter. Maybe, just MAYBE I'll get consistent ignition now and won't huck her into the creek.
