I've always been a messy bench type, and unfortunately the piling on has hit a point of being unable to get any thing done, as the bike shop has covered over the woodshop, and now all the gaps are being chinked with 18th century detritus.. And now I want to build guns. Its going to take a bunch of time and a few runs to the scrap yard to clear out space for a simple bench. I've got triples of just about every hand tool, so it takes forever to find "the right tool". Part of the process will be to get a basic kit in one place, and I'd like to build a wooden tool chest to work out of and keep everything separate from the rest of the chaos. I'll probably make a simplified traditional joiners chest, but was wondering, if anyone here had a chest they were working out of? I'll get a couple pictures of the the disaster area, just to reinforce the cautionary tale....

This is why a "temporary" bench should never be made with full sheets of plywood. There's actually a bike frame under the canvas. with 6 months of miscellanies piled on top. It needs to go to a frame builder, get powder coated and built up before I can move on to other things

My buddy Occam sez:

The simplest solution is usually correct. Ergo, you must compile 80% of the parts in/on your bench into a Wheeled-Dragoon-Flinlock'd-DaVincian-Pedal Powered-Black Powder-Rod Holding-Assaultcycle.

After that, the bench will be irrelevent as the New Mousetrap crowd hoists you onto their shoulders and carries you away to fame & fortune.

And babez. Babez in corsets & bonnets, most likely, but babez nonetheless. I hear they are attracted to the successful Wright Brothers types.

Edited to Add: I am eager to see what real toolbox ideas you come up with!

Your work bench looks as bad as mine. I feel your pain.

Only looks a little worse than my home machine shop (of course I have a home one!) except mine is all machine tools and gun parts small and large..
My work area is on the bench across from the mill, about 18"by 10 inches, next to a surface plate/storage shelf...

We are what we are and old habits are hard to break, in two weeks your work bench will be a mess again.
