When using chemical stains like AQF or lye, make a solution according to a formula others use. Take a third of that solution and add an equal amount of water. Try this dilute solution first. If not dark enough make a mix of the dilute and full strength. If not dark enough use the full strength solution.
I don’t care for figure in cherry. Plain is good. Just a personal preference. It’s not like curly maple to me.

Kibler gave the OP a really nice piece of wood with some very nice figure.
I'd use whatever stain to color as desired and then rely on the oil to make the figure pop. Once the oil is cured, paste wax will make it pop even more in whatever direction the oil started it. The wax can even be tinted to bias the color in whatever other direction is desired.
This is walnut, so not directly applicable, but perhaps an example of wax (in this case brown shoe polish) making the figure pop:
