Today, I had the opportunity to talk about early American firearms at the fall state meeting of the Kentucky Society U.S. Daughters of 1812 held at First Vineyard Winery near Nicholasville, KY. Yes...all 4 black powder guns were "NOT" loaded and "yes" the ladies were interested in the history of those guns!

Thanks bud ... The first few trade guns I had problems with the nails backing out so ... I found these round nails with things like rings down the length of em ... I get them now and grind the round heads square ... They dont back out , knock on wood , thank goodness ...
Ring shank nails. That's a great idea. Thank You

I would buy a traditions kit not as pricy as the others they go together very easily and shoot as good or better then any other kit out there that being said the locks can be hit or miss but are worth the added effort to have them tuned. you might talk to the people at Deer Creek or log cabin shop they may tune it for you if you buy the kit from them
How do I find these 2 shops

Welcome too the Forum Mr Powell

The Log Cabin shop is in Lodi Ohio
And Deer Creek is in Walden Indiana..

The Log Cabin is actually a black powder gun shop while Deer Creek is more of a mail order or Internet service.

They do have a small display area, but not what I wold call a shop.

I hope this helps you somewhat..
There’s always Dixie Gun Works down here in Tennessee as well…

I hope you find what you’re looking for and I’m sure your Granddaughter will cherish it from now on.👍

Good Luck

Smo

PS
Deer Creek does set up in Tip Curtis’s old building at Friendship during the Spring & Fall shoot

So far today I I've coned another barrel. This one is my TC 45 barrel that has done very well in local matches. I'm coning it enough to make it easier to start a tight combo. This gun has never cut patches but I did do the old thumb round off trick after coning.

445 ball. Of course it doesn't drop in like this with a patch.

I also am trying a mod to the sights. I outlined the rear sight the same way. Too bright??? I have a lot of acrylic paints so maybe a continuing experiment.

Absentmindedly began filing on my SMR trigger to get some slop in the front trigger... Was filing on the front trigger bar by mistake... Now it won't go off just pulling the front trigger, set only. I'm a big ol dummy. Jim is probably tired of my emails by now 😬

@longcruise I like the white paint on the sight. I tried white on mine too, but I couldn’t see it very well. I went to a bright pink color so it wouldn’t match any other color in the woods.
I was kinda wondering about that. I chose white because in the last match I shot the target was mostly black and the backboard is black celotex. A sight picture was near impossible. I had to form a sight picture on the brown berm below the backboard and then try to transport the sight picture to the target.

If it works with the white I'm going to try some other colors as well.

Thanks for the tip.

I feel for you but I've made sooo many similar mistakes that I can't resist responding with: 🤣 🤣

My brother used a whitish glow in the dark paint on his front sight. In the evening it gives him 10-15 min more in the woods.

Also, finished it. Just need to file some grooves in the end of the ramrod and stain it. Now that I look at it, probably need to file the guard where it meets the trigger plate so it sits flush. Gotta love the little things you notice when you think you're finished lol.
