Just got done dragging this fella in on public land. No UTV, just pulled a few yards at a time until I got him to my pickup around 700 yards away. Not going to do that again, nearly the death of me at my age. Got him with a Pedersoli Blue Ridge Rifle in .54, using a .530 round ball, .015 linen patch, and 60 grains of 3f Swiss. He walked up from behind my left shoulder as I was sitting on a log up up against a tree. He never saw me, despite wearing orange hat and vest. Fell at the shot, wish he had run towards my truck.

The long drag is one off the reasons I have give up hunting on local public land that doesn’t allow me to get near to pick up a deer. I just can’t do it anymore.

I started keeping a wheeled game hauler in my pickup. WAY easier than dragging. I do have to go from kill site to pickup and back, but if you are a ways back in, it's still well worth it vs dragging.

Nice. Good to see some ground hunting too.

Big lad that, well done, it's great until you gotta haul it!

How far was the shot?
About 23 yards is what I stepped off, and I'm pretty good at that being a former surveyor. 80% of big game of taken over 50+ years of hunting has been inside of 30 yards, and 95% within 75 yards. My longest muzzleloading buck was 127 yards, taken with a cheap CVA Deerhunter in .50 cal, using a Buffalo Ball-et. I'm more of a hunter, than a long range sniper, and I position myself for close shots. I do practice out to 125 yards, but that would be something I rather not do.

You're in good company

"…, In the jungle, at least one-half [of the large game shot] are under 50 yards, three fourths under 75, and all, with scarcely an exception, under 100 ; that is to say these are the distances at which animals are usually killed in jungle shooting, and I imagine that the case is very much the same in other forest countries. If any one thinks that the general run of his successful shots are at longer distances than these, let him put them to the crucial test of measuring ; and, if still unconvinced, all I can say is that his experience differs from my own and that of most shots of my acquaintance. " James Forsyth The Sporting Rifle and Its Projectiles 1867

"On looking over my game-book, I find that the average distance at which I have killed game on the plains is less than a hundred and fifty yards...," Theodore Roosevelt 26th President of The United States

My longest shot ever, was 110 yards, and I thought the doe was closer, her large size fooling me that she was closer so I took the shot. Most of mine are at 50 yards or less.

Congratulations!

I have one of those Blue Ridges. It’ll definitely get the job done!! 👍

Helped my son drag a much smaller buck in off public land two nights ago over hill and drainages. I told him I was glad it wasn't a big boy.

Glad you were successful. I have a Blue Ridge in .50. Good shooting rifles.
