Ok I am considering building a new stock for my sxs 12 gauge. Pecatonica doesn't offer a precarve. Don't know of any one else who might. My question is am I biting off more than I can chew? I have built a Kibler colonial, and two Hawkins from Pecatonica, one full and one half stock. Also a Kentucky pistol from same. My stock is quite a bit too short and I figured maybe I could remedy that by building a new stock, plus being in maple would be awesome.

Buy 2 blanks and have at it! Cheap practice. Halfstock blanks are not as expensive. I restocked an original double back in the 1980s. Since you have a stock in front of you to work from you’re ahead of the game. Plus all the parts are ready to go.

Go for it! It is not nearly as hard as people seem to think it is. Crisco Kid is right. The high grade wood can be a lot more difficult to work with. Plain wood is the way to start out.
