With one more day left and Sunday with a high of 5* I had a chance to pull the trigger at 48-50 yards on this small buck tonight.
I’m mostly a bow hunter. Usually I shoot one or two with my bow and that was enough but the past few years I’ve been carrying my Lyman’s GPR on the few firearm weekends in IL. This was the first chance I had
80 gr pyrodex, primed with Swiss 3f, 490 hornady prb, Remington #11 cap.
A few weeks ago I scored a lb of 2f Swiss, 2f goex, and a lb of Swiss 3f. So this summer I’ll switch to real BP and work up a load.

Depending on what part of Illinois you are from, a road trip to Mexico, Mo. and you can get all the powder you need.
I did take a road trip to get the BP. I’m up close to Rockford and found a guy near Sheffield IL. So I drove down there one day, about 2 hr drive to get it. Nice road trip. I probably should have bought more. Looking forward to trying it out. Probably have to go back down there next fall.
Thanks Snakebite.

I haven't lived in Illinois in a long time. Not sure if your able to have it shipped to you there or not, but Graffs can feed your addiction if the bug bit you good😉

Yeah just washed and put all my hunting clothes away for another year.
I got that one just in time.
First BP buck. Those rifles are really something. Lot funner than shotgun and more accurate I think

Mines a flinter but I love it! Fun is right. I was getting bored with modern firearms and just needed something to change it up. I got my 1st, Friday evening, with mine. I’m shooting real black powder. Schuetzen FFF in both my pan and my main charge. I didn’t want to mess with multiple powders. I guess if yours is a cap gun you don’t have that problem? I suspect I’ll be hunting a lot more with black powder. I’m hooked now for sure!

I’m already thinking of grabbing a Kibler Fowler smooth barrel for turkey hunting, squirrel hunting, or whatever. It’s fun just being challenged a bit more and giving the wildlife a little more chance on their end. Feel like it levels the playing field some .. if that makes sense. I’m growing older at 47yrs of age and it ain’t always about the kill anymore. When I have my flintlock in my hands I feel a little bit connected to some of the finer gentleman over the years that had no choice but to use them. It’s just an awesome experience no matter how you spin it!

Congratulations again on your buck

Thanks, love your enthusiasm and me and many members I’m sure understand too.
Well since I’m moving away from pyrodex I’m going to be in the testing stage to see which powder me and my gun likes, then I probably won’t switch it up much.
I have in the past( not this year) had some problems with caps popping but not the charge so this year for hunting I fed a little 3f in the flash hole to help ignite the pyro and bam fires every time. So I got to work on that to see if I can shoot without priming but I didn’t want to have a chance at a deer this year and just pop a cap at him. Maybe 3f as the main charge is the answer idk. I probably was clogging up the channel down there but idk.
