Updated range report - problem fixed!

Thanks Otter! I'll probably add 5 grains to my load. Much appreciated!

Updated range report - problem fixed!

Good advice on the field cleaning--I'll give that a try next time out. Or, just use a 5-gallon bucket in my garage. Yes, I am using an overpowder card (.125"). This was recommended to me a while back to help with more consistent patterning. In regard to the shooting tip, much...

Updated range report - problem fixed!

I must admit that I haven't even looked at one patch. I have a general idea of what I'm looking for, but I'm not sure what to do if I see something bad/wrong. If I understand it correctly, the patch shouldn't be torn or burnt. In a perfect world, what should it look like?

    nervous about using true black

Just thought I'd let everyone know that I'm now among the ranks of the true black powder users! I was having trouble getting my new .50 cal GPR percussion to settle in. Based on some good advice, I grabbed that can of GOEX FFFg and headed to the range this afternoon. I cleaned the...

Updated range report - problem fixed!

Well, time to provide an update on my latest visit to the range with my .50 cal GPR percussion. I posted my original "sighting woes" this past Saturday and received a TON of useful advice from a bunch of folks.  When I took my GPR to the range for the first time this past...

    nervous about using true black

Believe it or not, I actually have a pound (minus 6 shots) of GOEX FFFg at home. About 4 years ago, one of my best friends from Alaska came down to North Dakota to do some hunting with me. In Alaska, most every hunt is a major undertaking, so he was excited to do a little more relaxing...

    nervous about using true black

My original question was sincere. But, I must say that it's fun to see how a conversation unravels. I truly appreciate everyone's passion. As I pointed out originally, I am mostly ignorant to the use of true black powder. Or should I say, WAS IGNORANT. :haha: I have hunted since I was...

    nervous about using true black

I've been muzzleloader hunting for quite a long time, but I've never used true black powder. I'm not worried about the safety of using true black, rather I'm worried about the corrosive nature of true black. I'm very diligent about cleaning my MLers every time I use them. But, what do you do...

    Range report - advice needed!

With the .490 ball and .015" patch combination, they slide down the bore pretty easily. I'll first try a thicker patch--much cheaper than a box of round balls! Thanks all. I'll make sure to report on how this progresses for me. With a bit more tinkering, I'm optimistic this will lead to a...

    Range report - advice needed!

Cleaning between shots makes sense--now that I think of it! :) The OP card is .125" thick (purchased from Track of the Wolf) and has a cardboard feel to it--probably felt. This was recommended to me by several others on this site before I headed to the range. These gentlemen reported better...

    Range report - advice needed!

Thanks Rikeman. Makes me feel better that I'm not alone. It sure is fun to shoot, so getting to 100 plus shots fast won't be a problem!

    Range report - advice needed!

Of all the things you mentioned, I definitely didn't clean it often enough--maybe once every 6 or 7 shots. At that, I only ran one moist cleaning patch through. What is the proper (or best) way to clean between shots? The spring-loaded rear sight is a bit spooky. The screw that adusts the...

    Range report - advice needed!

I'll answer one person at a time--everyone sure had some great suggestions/ideas! Yep--I did clean out the bore. I used carb clear and a WHOLE LOT of cleaning patches until they came our near white. I dropped my bore light in there after cleaning tonight and she looked squeaky clean.

    Range report - advice needed!

Hello Gents, About 3 weeks ago, I purchased a Lyman GPR in a .50 cal percussion with a 1 in 60" twist. Today, I took it to the range for the first time to get her sighted in. I just love the gun! Well balanced, smooth trigger pull and it touches off almost as fast as a regular centerfire...

    Plastic deposits - help

My wife would more than likely volunteer to dish out the beating! :haha: :haha: I hate using the plastic shot cups, but I have two strikes against me--I'm an avid waterfowler and I'm too poor to shoot non-toxic shot other than steel. Now if I KNEW that a safe paper cup alternative...

    Plastic deposits - help

Thank you all very much! I feel a bit better now. :) The bores indeed look dull--glad to hear that it should be plastic. I just picked up a bottle of acetone. I did some internet searching and found many people using acetone to remove melted plastic from chromed surfaces--mainly bikers...

    Plastic deposits - help

Also, someone mentioned soaking the barrel with acetone for 20 minutes before brushing it out. Seems like this would take a ton of liquid to accomplish. Any insight on this? Sorry to drum up an old topic...

    Plastic deposits - help

Hello All, Previously on the "Smoothbore Forum" there was a thread on how to remove plastic deposits. All great information and I just reviewed all of it. My question is, however, how do you identify that plastic has lined your barrel? My question comes from the inspection of my Pedersoli 12...
