Starting charge for these new conicals

The 777 could be part of the problem but that's what they had when I was buying stuff so that's what I got. I did get the magnum caps though. I saw on another post here where guys were talking about being able to start with their thumb instead of a short stater. I was swabbing between every...

Starting charge for these new conicals

From my post a couple weeks ago I had gone to the range to fire my frontier for the first time. I had no experience and managed to get off two rounds before a malfunction sent me home early. I went back to the range today and was able to fire off 15 shots before I decided to call it a day. I...

Starting charge for these new conicals

I am assuming OAL is overall length? If so I measured them at 567 thousandths. I suppose I'll start with 80 grains and adjust from there.

Starting charge for these new conicals

On my first trip to the range I was only able to fire 2 shots of patched round ball before I had to call it a day. It was my first time shooting any muzzleloading rifle and I used 70 grains of triple seven FFg. I am going back to the range on Tuesday and will take with me the same round balls...

    Bent Hammer?

On my last post here I mentioned that I had gone to the range and was only able to fire two shots. The third shot wouldn't fire. I haven't been back to the range yet, but while looking things over at home I looked at my rifle from a different angle than before. It seems my hammer is not fully...

first trip to the range...two shots

When I first got the rifle I wasn't sure what had been down the barrel so I used a bronze brush and Hoppes9. Upon first cleaning this produced all kinds of dirty patches from green copper fouling to black to dark brown. I had these pretty sopping wet from the solvent so they started into the...

first trip to the range...two shots

I went home with the plan of turning down the cleaning jag to get it to fit better, but before I did I thought I ought to try one more time to see how it fits. I didn't turn down the jag yet because of two things I realized. I was having a hard time pushing the jag with the cleaning patch down...

first trip to the range...two shots

 The wealth of information is amazing. To answer your question about the precussion caps This is what I was using caps I'll try some thinner patches first since they're cheaper and because I have 97 .490 balls left. Hopefully I can find a good muzzleloading merchant at this weekend's...

frontier stock refinished! , but need tack help

Yes it came apart in shipping and the missing piece was found in the bottom of the box. I think the former owner weakend the wood with his brass nails and the shipping finished the job. I used a 2 part epoxy and probably could have done a better job as you can see the crack still on the bottom...

first trip to the range...two shots

I was looking for just cci #11 caps, but all they had was winchester #11 magnum caps so that's what I ended up with. Here's the jag I bought. jag Should I order a smaller one or should I turn this one down a bit? I'll put a micrometer on it when I get home to see what the actual size is.

first trip to the range...two shots

It's only new to me. I bought it used and the proof mark puts it at 1992. The front sight may have been changed or altered for all I know. It doesn't appear to have been filed but it is scuffed up a bit and some of the finishi is gone here and there. I really need to touch it up with a bit of...

frontier stock refinished! , but need tack help

I have refinished a bunch of stocks before and usually stop at 220, but on this one I had some small imperfections that I could still see after the 220. They were gone after the 320 though. Probably didn't need to go as high as the 500, but I figured I wasn't going to hurt anything. I didn't...

first trip to the range...two shots

Thanks George, some good info here. I was using the hogdgon triple 7 from bass pro because that's what they had. I used the .490 ball + .020 patch + 70 grains of the FFg because that's what the hogdgon website recommended, so that's what I ordered from trackof the wolf. The ball was really tight...

frontier stock refinished! , but need tack help

Don't know. The finish as I received it was just a varnish or shellac top coat. There was nothing 'in' the wood. I just removed it with a few coats of citrusstrip and then sanded from 150,180,220,320, and finally 500 grit papers. I gave it about 4 coats of 100% tung oil thinned with mineral...

frontier stock refinished! , but need tack help

Toothpicks worked. I just rolled them in a bit of wood glue and then stuck them in each hole, then tapped each one a bit with a small hammer. I came back later and cut them flush with a razor blade an then used a punch to countersink a small dent in each one to accept the new tacks. As I said...

first trip to the range...two shots

There was powder in the barrel. I had thoroughly cleaned the barrel the other day and gave the bore a light coat of oil. The nipple must have been crudded up with something. So what is the proper procedure between shots? Should I be running something down the barrel every time? Should I be...

first trip to the range...two shots

I was able to take my 50 cal frontier to the range today to fire it for the first time. This was also the first time I'd ever fired a muzzle loading rifle of any kind. I got set up at the 50 yard line and took my time. I used a .490 hornady ball and .020 wonderlube ox yoke in front of 70 grains...

frontier stock refinished! , but need tack help

I really didn't care for the reddish varnish on the frontier I picked up a couple weeks ago on gunbroker. The finish in my opinion was to dark, too red, and had to many spots and scratches. I wanted better finish where the grain of the wood would really show. Here's before: And here's...

    Removing spots and drum screw

Thanks for all the advice. I was able to get the drum screw out using the drill press method as mentioned above along with a couple squirts of some break free lubricant. I cleaned up the trigger guard and butt plate with some barkeepers friend. The butt plate was easy and was clean in a few...

first post, need some help with Pedersoli identification

Thanks to everyone for your help so far. I was able to source a replacement part ramrod from Flintlocksetc. It should be here in a couple days. In the meantime I picked up a can of triple 7 ffg and a box of winchester #11 magnum caps with some leftover money on a bass pro gift card. I bought a...
