What ball sizes to start with?

I use a .575 ball in a paper cartridge lubed on the ball end and 70 gr. of 3f for 3 to 5 inch groups at 50 yards. I didn't have to clean until after 15 rounds. I like this combo for hunting, fast reload if needed.

    2024/2025 Squirrel Hunting Thread...........

The advantage of a muzzleloader is that I can use less powder for small game. Before the change in the law i took squirrels with my 50 cal. loaded with less powder. Good accuracy and less meat destruction.

    2024/2025 Squirrel Hunting Thread...........

Years ago I bought the parts to make a 45 cal. long rifle. You could hunt deer and squirrels at the same time. Then the blame commission changed the rules. Has to be 40 cal. or smaller for small game. When I called and asked why the change, the person on the other end kept saying that people...

Need help to ID a Muzzleloader

looks like you've got a smoothbore, a 54 caliber translates to a 28 gauge. Being percussion it's post 1840 manufacture. I'd have it checked by knowledgeable black powder gunsmith before shooting it.

My new smoothbore was a slobbered up mess after it's first day at the range!

Never had problems with fouling using paper cartridges lubed on the ball end with Lehigh Valley Lube, which is no more. I understand that Mr. Flintlock is just as good.

    The unthinkable!

ADDING SOLDER TO LEAD FOR ROUND BALL CASTING

If i remember right the Bevel Brothers shot rifled muzzleloaders with soft balls and balls cast from wheel weights with no notable difference in accuracy. I hunt with a 20 ga. smoothie, so I am not worried about expansion.

Who can jug choke a smoothbore barrel?

After all of my years of small game hunting, I'm still trying to figure out why everyone wants a tighter choke? the double I started out with was chocked full and full. as a youngster of 10 years old I couldn't hit squat. Squirrels no matter how high were dead meat. My dad had a double bored for...
