Too much powder?
It may help your powder to think about what is printed on modern shotshells that you might use - the "drams equivalent" markings. One dram is 27 grains of powder.... so a 54 gr load would be the 2 drams, and the mid 60s would get you the 2.5 dram that quite a lot of modern "light" field/target...- new2bp

CVA barrel replacement

What is the reasonable distance to quickly kill a turkey with a muzzleloader?

Why brass over copper?
Bronze you can also do lost wax casting, my grandpa did a lot of artwork this way, but anything that requires a precise fit will need to be oversize and then hand fitted- new2bp

Advice For New Guy Requested
I would go for one of the 1858 clones. Caps cost same no matter what caliber and while there isnt much difference in ball cost or powder use the 44 brings a big boost in performance. And can always be loaded light. Then again with cap availability like it is I would seriously consider a flint... -

Smoothbores shooting round ball really high
Do it like this but use thicker cylinder and instead of pins use tiny 4-40 set screws one on each side This way bit uglier but easy to out on/take off depending on what you plan on shooting that day- new2bp

Fast follow up shot for a single shot pistol or rifle?
If hunting something that has the potential to be dangerous (pigs, bears, etc) then I would really like to have a buddy there with his rifle loaded and ready as well. Failing that, my plan for hog hunting (if I can find a spot) is to carry my 1858 as well as my .54 percussion. -

I've Searched and Searched but Cannot Find a Scope Base for Frankenstuffer.

Actual Weights of Different Powders Measured by Volume
Use mL or CCs. In fact, you could about go with the weight of water for 2f and 3f ... 1g/ml or 1g/cc and 15.4gr per gram. Per Lee with their dippers 1cc of 2f is 14.70gr BY WEIGHT, 3f is 15.9. I order real BP once a year or so at the same time im getting smokeless, usually going in with a buddy so $45 in shipping etc averages out to a couple of bucks per pound On the other hand there is a big difference between dropping $300+ at once vs 35-40 every so often especially on a low or... -
