    Too much powder?

It may help your powder to think about what is printed on modern shotshells that you might use - the "drams equivalent" markings. One dram is 27 grains of powder.... so a 54 gr load would be the 2 drams, and the mid 60s would get you the 2.5 dram that quite a lot of modern "light" field/target...

    Mini in a smoothbore?????

Coming in a tad late and I can see its been mentioned, but wanted to chime in A rifled barrel stabilizes things by spinning them at a hopefully appropriate rate for shape and length. Even round ball, though the spin rate is usually very slow However a Foster style slug in a smooth bore doesnt...

An Abomination? Not For Sensitive Viewers

My CVA percussion .54 has a plastic camo stock from the factory. I'd prefer wood, but don't mind the camo part. The flimsy feeling plastic though.... Took my first bird last year with a modern, decent but not shiny wood and parkerized metal. He never noticed me or the gun. Also have a few...

    CVA barrel replacement

Problem with CVA percussion rifles is the way they installed the breech plug and drum, etc. Breech plug in, then drum hole drilled and tapped and drum screwed in. Of course, if you end up having it bored out or relined whoever does the work will have the same issue to deal with. I would...

    Peep/globe sights for hunting

My only peeps are on cartridge guns but I have no issue using them in various lighting conditions Ghost rings work well too, better than buck horn or other open sights, but they do lose a bit of precision for me. But tbh when shooting the front stuffer the relatively crude (compared to my...

Copper in a New Army 44?

I would join the modernmuzzloader "stepsister" site and ask there (so I can reply with suggestions that will have the purists here taking extra blood pressure meds)

What is the reasonable distance to quickly kill a turkey with a muzzleloader?

Hit my buddy's place yesterday and we had a blast (haha! a pune, or a play on words!) with ML shotguns. I was only able to get a decent pattern to 17 yards or so, and I had to go up to 1.5oz of #5 to do it. Based on what I was seeing at 20 and 25 yards it falls apart quickly and even...

What is the reasonable distance to quickly kill a turkey with a muzzleloader?

Rifles are legal fer turkeys here Head or neck shot with anything reasonable or body shot with enough whomp behind it. And a 200gr pitol bullet being used as a 45 conical driven at 1500fps with 45ish gr 3f aint enough whomp when delivered center of mass. I would actually skip the body and be...

    Why brass over copper?

Bronze you can also do lost wax casting, my grandpa did a lot of artwork this way, but anything that requires a precise fit will need to be oversize and then hand fitted

    Advice For New Guy Requested

I would go for one of the 1858 clones. Caps cost same no matter what caliber and while there isnt much difference in ball cost or powder use the 44 brings a big boost in performance. And can always be loaded light. Then again with cap availability like it is I would seriously consider a flint...

Smoothbores shooting round ball really high

Do it like this but use thicker cylinder and instead of pins use tiny 4-40 set screws one on each side This way bit uglier but easy to out on/take off depending on what you plan on shooting that day

Fast follow up shot for a single shot pistol or rifle?

If hunting something that has the potential to be dangerous (pigs, bears, etc) then I would really like to have a buddy there with his rifle loaded and ready as well. Failing that, my plan for hog hunting (if I can find a spot) is to carry my 1858 as well as my .54 percussion.

Where can we find percussion caps?

Go to ammoseek.com - look under the primers area, and search for the keyword "percussion". Couple of hits come up, one for musket caps and one for RWS caps - 'spensive though.... https://ammoseek.com/reloading/primers?ikw=percussion I'm about to say "fark it" and buy the tap-o-cap kit and...

I've Searched and Searched but Cannot Find a Scope Base for Frankenstuffer.

Hate to even mention this... but some "tacticool" (tacticrap) scope rings have addtional rail slots on top of 'em. Oh, and they fit 1" diameter scopes. Some creative dremel action can certainly get you a front sight, rear sight will be mid-barrel after forearm or require more time in the...

Actual Weights of Different Powders Measured by Volume

Use mL or CCs. In fact, you could about go with the weight of water for 2f and 3f ... 1g/ml or 1g/cc and 15.4gr per gram. Per Lee with their dippers 1cc of 2f is 14.70gr BY WEIGHT, 3f is 15.9. Unfortunately no reference as to which brand of powder they were using... Good news is for those of...

    Real black powder

I order real BP once a year or so at the same time im getting smokeless, usually going in with a buddy so $45 in shipping etc averages out to a couple of bucks per pound On the other hand there is a big difference between dropping $300+ at once vs 35-40 every so often especially on a low or...

Thread size will be gun dependent (CVA vs Traditions vs TC vs ...) and then the actual nipple shape is different as well.
