New idea for a Range/Cleaning Rod?

Warning - mentions of inlines and redneck engineering follow.... Have hankerin for BP shotgun. Am poor. Bought single shot 12ga at pawn shop, a ShortLane adapter, now I have inline 12ga. Need ramrod - the range rod and field rod for my .54 aren't cutting it - they are too skinny and let...

Do I really need to lube my balls?

Lubed wad (straight crisco) between powder and ball, no lube on top of ball, using .451" balls on my Uberti 1858 NMA. Have put 6 cylinders through on a single range trip w/ no issues, could've gone more but ran out of powder.

    Wallflower guns

I went a whole week before shooting my 54 'cause I had to order balls and all that other caliber specific stuff But I did pop a cap as soon as I got it home

    Spending More Shooting .54

Hrm... price difference at Dixie for .54 maxis vs .50 or .45 maxis is 0 or darn close to it. 60gr of powder is 60gr of powder (or 90, but hey, its your shoulder) Don't see much of a difference between costs..... Now if you want to talk about availability and options, well....

Shot the Philly Derringer today to check penetration.

Out of curiosity, how about loading it with some larger bird shot (#4-ish) and seeing what kind of spread you get? Buddy used to carry one of the good American Derringers in 45lc/410, he'd load it with #6 birdshot loads figuring nothing he could use in it would reliably stop someone with one...

    Storing Black Powder

right next to my smokeless powders. In original sealed container in a filing cabinet drawer in my office with all my reloading and shooting stuff But then I only have a couple pounds of bp. And less than 10lbs smokeless across 4 flavors

    Cap maker question

My Uberti that uses Remington #10s also uses CCI #11s just fine... my .54 didn't until I replaced the nipple. Might wanna post here asking who has what kit and for them to take some measurements to figure out where they fall on this chart...

    Muzzleloaders and firearm laws

That is a Federal thing - all migratory game is non-lead only. GCA 1968 required serials on long guns, NFA '34 required 'em for pistols and regulated non-firearms (suppressors, machine guns, destructive devices, AOWs, SBRs, SBSes). Just picked up another old single shot 12ga today, no serial...

    Pre-measured powder or shot tubes

I use cases as powder measures... 223 case holds almost 30gr, 308 class case holds 50gr. Got a few .30-378 Weatherby Mag cases from a buddy, they hold 130ish gr H20, so I figure I can cut them down to make a 70 and 90gr measure.

    Muzzleloaders and firearm laws

Dunno. Plenty of cartridge guns made before 1968 don't have serials (I own three at the moment)

    Pre-measured powder or shot tubes

I have some 4ml ones with a built-in flip top/snap top lid (ie, easy open with thumb of hand holding it). Since I use the same ones for my revolver and my rifle, I just put 30gr in each one and use one per chamber on the revolver and two in the rifle.

1853 Enfield sling…was it just for carrying?

Almost 60 years later but the 1907 sling for hte '03 series rifles (30-06 bolt guns) was specced to be used as an accuracy aid, so prior to the turn of the century by a good bit I'm sure. Oh, and that old 1907 sling is STILL the recommended one if you do something like an Appleseed course...

Trying to buy everything I need to shoot my new .44

A "not adjustable powder measure" on the cheap is a fired 223 case (30gr) or 308 case (~53gr depending on exact brass dimensions inside) or 30-06 case (~63gr depending again on brass inside). Or, any of the cases based on those will be similar if they aren't cut down. For something much...

    Newbie looking for advice

He speaks the truth. A BP gun was always on my want list... saw a smokin' deal on a 1858 revolver and grabbed it, then started pondering a rifle... finally get back out to the world after covid shutdowns and fall into a pretty good deal on a .54 rifle... and while I want a smaller caliber (as...

    Crockett Pistol Velocity Surprise

Energy is not quite the same as stopping power but it is something that can be calculated... What did that crazy old professor say? Ah yes.... energy is mass times velocity times velocity Differences in stopping power come down to being able to penetrate to and deliver sufficient kinetic energy...

    Heat from candle

Read similar in an old outdoors magazine 40 years ago or more... Having used it here in N Florida (got to 17 one February when I was out camping...) and the real key is that you must have a relatively still airspace without a lot of air flow. And because of that you gotta watch the CO2 and CO...
