    Good day afield

I very much agree. I burnt up plenty of powder, wadding, cups and shot learning that the heavy loads shoot best for me in this gun . my barrel length is 42 inches.

    Good day afield

Not really much kick at all! using only the card wads and paper shotcup even with two ounces is very manageable. I tried other felt wad and heavy card wad loads which did kick a little and also made for inconsistent patterns. I think that was due to the thicker wads blowing thru the shot. (...

    Good day afield

I went online including this site to look at all the info I could including techniques. Then I had to find a hone that would fit the barrel and a way to try to mic my progress which turned out to be a crude method. Some meticulous measuring and marking and away I went! You can PM me if you...

    Good day afield

Finally got out on a duck hunt with my 11 ga flinter. 90 gr.2F, 2 over powder cards, paper shotcup filled with 2 oz #4 bismuth, over shot card. Gun has a jug choke installed by me using a brake hone.

Maybe the end of an era...what'll be the effects?

I agree, flehto. I enjoy shooting / hunting with ALL my guns which happens to include 2 custom flinters. I surely hope I am not looked down upon for using inlines too. I hunt with my black powder guns when ever legal to do so. I dont need a special season. I do support having special seasons...

    blunderbus

Many years ago my buddy used a rock salt load to deter dogs straying into his yard after repeated warnings to their owner. One small chunk of salt held together and penetrated one dogs rib cage killing it on the spot. Something to keep in mind if considering rock salt to deter.

    Options for misaligned vent?

I bought a kit from TOTW and put a ventliner in my 11 ga smoothie myself. Take a look and see if it is something you want to tackle. It went well and I am certainly not a machinist!

    Hevishot

I use nickel plated lead on turkeys and heavy shot, bismuth or steel on geese and ducks. I use some plastic wads and rolled paper shot cups mostly and havent seen any barrel damage. Do some test loads and keep an eye on your spent wads what ever load you try. As Paul said, the spent wads tell...

    10 ga load

I did not have good patterns in an 11 ga. using thick wads either. Making a shot cup out of paper helped my patterns. Keeping the bore lubed between shots keeps fouling down. I swab between shots unless a quick follow up is needed.

    Bird Shot Questions

I use #5 nickel plated for turkeys and like it. I get it from Ballistic Products as well.

When and Why did you get started?

I started with a TC percussion 54 for deer in about 1974. I am a hunter too and had hunted some with single shot centerfires. Picked up a muzzleloader for a challenge and the accuracy. From there I went to a SxS Pedersoli 12 ga.for waterfowl, turkey and pheasant, Thru a few more percussion 50...

    TC Firestorm

I too have a Firestorm flinter. It shoots well. I have not had any ignition problems using 4fg in the pan, and thats stuffing it with black powder or triple 7 pellets. I have traditional flinters too that shoot well if not better. I like hunting and shooting with all my guns, center and...

Started out as a Squirrel hunt...

I agree. I am now retired but at work I had to put down many injured deer etc. Behind or in the ear aimed on a path to exit the opposite eye always took only one shot to do the job.

Turkey hunting - Head shots vs. Body shots ?

Last summer I disposed of some saved turkey wings. Wish I had them to send to you now. Maybe could have helped your load work up. Might not hurt to see if there are any domestic turkey farms around where you could possibly get some wings or a carcass??

Turkey hunting - Head shots vs. Body shots ?

I think you will have fun working up a load for turkeys. I have shot a few with smokeless and BP. Called in a few for others to shoot. Keep in mind that they are one tough bird to kill. My BP kills were #4 copper coated lead ( largest shot allowed in WI) over 80 grains FFG at less than 25 yds...
