    1750s Men's Cloak Pattern/dying wool

Thanks Snapper, glad you had some success. I've read of Rit dye constantly bleeding, and while I can't see that happening if you follow the process instructions properly, I didn't know of others might have had the same experience, particularly when exposed to rainy conditions or something. I'm...

    1750s Men's Cloak Pattern/dying wool

Howdy folks. I was fortunate enough to come across three very nice felted 100% wool blankets at the thrift store, and I plan to make them into two 1750s-style cloaks, one for my wife and one for myself. We have found a decent pattern for a hooded cloak for my wife online, but I haven't seen...

    Pilgrim's Muskets

The description of the evidence that I read seems fairly convincing. Obviously we can never know for sure, but think about it: it was found in what is known to have been John Alden's house, with a stock of European wood (and an American walnut repair), in a space not known to have existed for...

    Kings Howtizer Build

That's funny, I think I was standing about 50 yards from you when you did that. I didn't realize this was that cannon at Ft Jackson.

    Cleaning....

Historically speaking, how did guys do this in the field? Thinking about the Rev War or CW, I can't imagine how many guys pieces must have rusted up solid if it's true that they'll rust up overnight. We have access to all the tools we need within minutes of shooting, but those guys didn't...

    Flint source

I was just asking in another thread about the possibility of using the original Bess flints that you can find on eBay for under $1/piece when purchasing in bulk. One gentleman said they're a bit more crude, but they still work like a charm and are a really good deal for useable flints.

    Original Bess Flints

I was looking on eBay at a large lot of the original Bess flints that were found in Nepal, they looked like they were unused, and it started me to thinking - for the price (I think it was under $1/each) that's more economical than buying them new. Has anyone attempted to use any of these...

    Pilgrim's Muskets

One place I read suggested that it was because the matchlocks were more complicated, and surprisingly, more expensive. I dunno, I'm no expert...

    Pilgrim's Muskets

They put 'em to good use! An interesting footnote in history, from Peter Marshall and David Manuel's The Light and the Glory. Shortly after landing at Plymouth, several men went to scout out Cape Cod, and were ambushed by a hostile Indian tribe. "'But presently, all of the sudden they heard a...

    Pyrodex as a primer

Good points by all, and that's true... it probably would be difficult to be consistent. But just for kicks maybe I'll try a small amount and just set it off on the concrete to see if there's any noticeable difference...

    Pyrodex as a primer

I'm curious, I know on the can of black powder it says never to mix with other powders, but have any of you ever tried mixing real black powder 1 for 1 with a sub just to see how it performed compared to straight BP? My predicament is that I have some sub stuff that I don't have as much use...

    Pyrodex as a primer

I've done it once, and was very surprised how well it touched off. That was with a very cheap, poor-grade repro flinter that hardly sparked at all, though maybe the problem wasn't the frizzen after all, I dunno! Either way, it worked for me once, I believe it was 3f stuff in both pan and barrel.

    Ft Toulouse

Thanks to another member on this forum, I received my fowler less than an hour before leaving to go to Ft Toulouse's Frontier Days today, and had a great time. I'm the right, an old friend of mine is the voyageur on the left.

    We are out of style....

dc7x64, I think I've heard about that movie in the past. Trailer looks pretty decent, though I did see someone comment on the inaccurate choice of lady's attire, so as a reenactor I suppose that might irk me some, but I like the plot and theme.

    Buying powder

I tried checking Bass Pro Shop online (they have a store near me, probably the most convenient, but I wanted to check prices first) and they didn't show ANY real black powder online. Do they really carry it in the stores?
