    Dropped by Bookies Shop tonight!

I don't know if he uses it or not. However, some time back there was a guy on this site that posted pictures of a .32(I Think )Flinter he said was stained with Tobacco in Denatured alcohol. Looked great too. I did a search on natural stains in Google. They listed Tobbacco, but it used water and...

    Dropped by Bookies Shop tonight!

Twas a learning experience. Last time I was over he was rifling a barrel, even did his best Tom Sawyer impression and let me take a mess of strokes on the rifling bench. Tonight, he was turning a new drum for the rifling bench. If you get a chance to drop in it's always a good time and your...

    Charcoal

I have not used it for Blacksmithing. But have been using "Royal Oak"brand Charcoal in the Weber. It's real wood chunk charcoal, puts out lots of heat,(in red bag)heats evenly and burns clean. There are two Walmarts within 20 miles of me. One Carries it on a regular business, the other does not.

    Gravers from Sawzall Blades

Looking at all the discarded Sawzall blades in my case last night. I got to wondering if thet could be made into gravers or anyother useful tools. Knowing how I have abused some they must be made of pretty good stuff?

    Favorite wood finishes and techniques?

Back in the archives somewhere, someone had posted pictures of a .32 finter that used a Tobacco Stain. He said it was tobacco in denatured alcohol. That was a pretty gun! So I did some research on the net. All tobacco stains I found were Tobacco in Water and ammonia. I intend to do some...

    Vise Mounting?

It's a done deal. I found that 1/2" step shank bit that would fit my 3/8" drill last night(forgot where I put it?). I also remounted my big Benchtop drill press back on the stand(it had been removed for repair). I have a second small benchtop drill press 6 speed, I bought to use in the repair of...

    HERE'S THE BEGINNING

I would do as Plink said and work out a contrasting border in either metal or wood. Make it look deliberate and don't tell anyone it was a mistake! A wise old carpenter once told me "the measure of a craftsmans skill was how big a mistake he could fix for the least amount of money and make it...

    Buying Pillow Ticking

    ROFLMAO!

    Vise Mounting?

Well it's going to be a compromise. It's mounted with 3- 1/2" Carriage bolts 5" long. One is full length and two cut off. #4 is going to have to be a lag bolt since it goes into the solid end of the cabinet. I had to take the steel plae off since I don't have a 1/2" drill chuck for the metal...

    Vise Mounting?

Grey Whiskers and Davy: Lazy people are always looking for shortcuts! :) They usually wind up getting to the same point by going the long way around. You have reinforced what I already knew. I'll get the bolts to go all the way through and cut them off! Thanks!

    Vise Mounting?

I have been getting by with a 3 1/3" vise mounted on a 2"X T that I clamped in a Woodworking vise on my bench. Since it is inadequate if I wish to put some muscle to it, I'm going to break down and get a 6" to mount on a wall mounted bench I have also. The top is made of two 1" layes of plywood...

    Recycling barrel?

That is a valid and reasonable question. It looks like I might have the price of a new barrel by the time you consider parts, labor and shipping, but I have seen nothing off the rack for under $150 worth the effort of lifting off the rack. I can use it as I have for the past 25 yrs. But it owes...

    Recycling barrel?

I kind of figured as much, but did not even notice the serial numbers until last night after cleaning the barrel and installing a new nipple.

    Recycling barrel?

Yes I did remove the drum. Whem I realized I could not get the breech plug out, I took it over to Bookie's shop and we could not get it out. Steve explained that CVA assembles barrel, breech plug and drum and drill them as a unit, causing burs in the threads that can lock everything together. I...

    Recycling barrel?

I have a .50 cal CVA barrel the Breech Plug will not come out. I have been advised to send it to TOW and have a patend breech installed. My question is I understand altering serial Numbers are "big time jail time". The serail number is in the last inch of the barrel, which would be cut off to...
