I seen in one of the other post that some of you folks go to Walmart for your patch material. Can you accually get .015 material and how do you go about measuring the thickness or is it already labled with the thickness on it. Tell me how to buy it.

Burch :hmm:

The best thing to use is a dial caliper that will read to the thousands. You can usually pick them up at sporting goods stores that carry loading supplies or at a Lowes store or Home depot.

You may get some funny looks (but on the other hand I've had more than one sales lady comment that I must be a blackpowder shooter), but just take a micrometer with you and measure the thickness of the material while it is still on the bolt before buying it. I usually measure at a couple of different places and try not to get too close to the edge of the material.

:) Take a micrometer with you, find that thickness of brass or something then get the micrometer feel from that. If asked why you measure it that way, tell them that you are making a very small pair of shorts. If buying materal for a tent or tipi then you are making a nighty for your wife. works every time. Then take it home and put it in a pillow case to keep the ravelings contained and wash it . this to get the sizeing out of the material , make sure it is cotton. Bob

Most of the Wally World 100% pillow ticking that I have seen comes in right around .018". Red or blue, same thickness. There is one difference between the two colors however, Republicans shoot the red striped stuff, Democrats the blue. :rotf:

Why didnt someone tell me this before I bought the whole bolt of blue stripe?????????

I took a micrometer with me. it has been calibrated on a certified block, so its dead on.
I prefer to use the clutch so Iget the same compresion timeandagain. Our walmart has blue at .018 and the red, last batch, was .017

havinf a tool that is calibrated really helps,in more ways than one, in this sport!

I looked at that stuff yesterday at WALLY WORLD and there was NO label on either of the bolts stating what they were made from... I backed off, thinking that if it was 100% COTTON it would have said so :shocked2:

I knew there was a reason I preferred the red!

Howdy! I usually use the red ticking from wally world. Generally it runs about .16 thick. Its a little tight in my .50 with a .490 ball but manageable as long as I swab every 5 or so shots.Well last week I went after another couple yards and found some plain ticking without the stripes. It mics out at .15. Seems the weave is a little tighter also. I havent shot any yet but ill let you know how it does.Have a good un  ........TN

I buy my pillow tick from JoAnn Fabric. If I remember correctly it mics at about .020 or .021 but compresses to about .012. If anyone is particularly interested in the specifics, I will be glad to check again.

I just bought a 1/2yd of the red ticking from JoAnn's and I noticed that it mikes thick but loads easy.

It is a tightly woven cotton cloth that works well. Try asking for this at Joanna's or any other fabrics shop.

I never measured, but I think it was about .017 or .018, but it was dense and consistent for those who used it. I am looking for some where I now live since I am running low on my ticking and just want to try something different.
