    Hunting method / Still hunting

Forgot one! A "drive" is a hunt on foot. I do my gun hunting sitting still on the ground, only use stands for bowhunting. The idea is, I like to have the flexability to "move in" closer for a shot if I need to (actually so I can lay over and take a nap while waiting for daylight!) I still hunt...

My 1st kill with sidelock and roundball

Today was day 3 of IL 2nd gun season. I was feeling a little ill over missing a doe yesterday, about a 60 yard freehand shot. This morning at daylight, I saw a nice 8-pointer, woulda been a good one to break in the .54 GPR on, but a shot just wouldn't present itself. It rained the rest of the...

What you reading in these cold days?

Finished Native American History, started George Catlin's Letters & Notes... on North American Indians and The Men Who Wear the Star by Charles M. Robinson.

    Camo, blaze orange observations...

I can certainly sympathize! I used to think that once I climbed safely into my tree stand, I'd remove my cap or hide my orange so the deer wouldn't see it. Now I hunt off the ground with a blaze orange vest and another vest, which I cut the elastic straps off of, around my head like a kerchief...

    Finally bought a BP rifle.

JimG, do you happen to be located around the southern end of IL? I can help you locate BP in these parts

Who's goin' after what over Thanksgiving?

Going after deer and/or turkey with the bow in the morning. Next gun season ain't until next Thursday. Highs in low 40's for tomorrow with 20's-30's wind chill. I've always wanted to kill a turkey on Thanksgiving day. Maybe tomorrow!

    Deer Season in MO

Don't be discouraged. The later you fill your tag, the more you get to hunt. That's become my strategy too. We'll get 'em next time!

    On-Line check -in in Illinois

If you call in, you talk to a recorded voice that asks "20 questions" and you punch all your dimensions in on the touchtone. Must be really convenient for the non-resident deer hunter-campers. Shawnee Forest is not yet equipped with phone booths and internet access. :youcrazy:

    Wish Me Luck

Our 3-day first season just ended as well. I'm using .54 GPR same as you for my first ever hunt with a sidelock. Saw 12 opening morning and 4 turkeys, 14 that evening, including 5 spike bucks. On three occasions I had a deer within 10 yards. Didn't want to use my only tag up too early now! Good...

8 Pointer with .54cal Flint Smoothbore

Roundball, sounds like you're having a really enviable season! Congratulations on your success. My ML hunting journal doesn't begin until tomorrow morning. Your post just makes me all the more impatient. :cursing: :haha:

    ATV, do you ride?

Been there, done that. Anything I kill in Shawnee Forest, where 4-wheelers are restricted entirely, I have to drag whether I want to or not. That did include some "uphill all the ways". On my own private property, I wouldn't be disturbing anyone, unless they were tresspassing, to which they...

    ATV, do you ride?

ATV's are fine when used with discernment. When hunting or scouting on my 30 acres or my father's 160 acres, I don't use one. I don't like to make it part of the hunt. My feeling is that it changes the condition of the hunt, deer will react to it in some way. I like to maintain a bit of...

    friend's stuck ball with powder

Just a thought- Is the tip of the ball puller still sharp or is it somehow blunted? If so, it won't start easily. I'd first make sure I didn't just need a new puller.

    latest gander mountain catalog

I always go into Paducah's Gander Mountain and ask for stuff I know they don't have, just to let 'em know they don't meet all sportsman's demands. Maybe the word will get around to someone important.

    Dry Ballin Blows!!!!

In the short time that I've shot sidelocks, I've unfortunately become a bit of an expert at ball-pulling. I find it quicker than running powder through the flash channel. I swab the barrel with oil first, clean it well with dry patches, then the last swab is a wet one. I start the threads into...

    Cover Scent Soap

All I use is the green body wash, not necessarily as a "cover scent"...I don't believe it traps or vanishes my scent...but because I think it does have less odor than conventional scented soap. If possible, I take a shower immediately before every hunt. I think just being clean has more bearing...
