Where do i ship a muzzleloader?

I would hate to see anyone go to jail or lose there right to own guns just because they dont know or understand the law. I prefer USPS for all my shipping needs. I can and do ship rifles and shotguns by them whenever I need to ship one. If its a muzzleloader I can ship it to anyone I want and...

Jonathan Browning Vs. Lyman Great Plains??

I only saw one Browning and it was gone before I could get back with the money for it.I own a GPR and while they are a good rifle I would go for th e Browning. As far as parts are concerned while I doubt that you'll need any I'm sure new locks and triggers can be made to work from all the new...

    Shooting TWO patched balls?

I've done it a lot!!!Not much good out past 50 yards but works well at shorter ranges. Used to be called loading for bear.Common practice years ago. FRJ

    Lyman 57 GPR sights?

The Lyman peep screws right on to existing holes already in the tang. I dont use any aperature just the hole they screw into.I use a blade front sight. I only have half an eye on my sighting side so without the peep I wouldn't be able to shoot at all.Yea some of the traditionalists hate them so...

    Burning Patches

I fought the same thing several years ago with P/dex. I would get the rifle zeroed and a week later it was all over the place. Switched to real black powder and I couldnt believe the difference. Try some you'll like it. FRJ

    Underhammer Rifles?

If memory serves me right they were made with gain twist barrels. They used to be relatively inexpensive and were good shooters. FRJ

    book on "possible bags"

I'm wanting to make a "possible" or shooting bag and am looking for a book to guide me on the way such a bag should look like, materials, and method of construction. Any help would be gratefully accepted. FRJ

    Good looking or not?

I'll guarantee you that a poor boy at $600.00 will shoot right along with a $2000.00 engraved and carved longrifle.I like plain rifles but some really like the fancy ones. If both are made with the same barrel and lock both should shoot equally well. FRJ

    Hardening sear on Hamm lock

I just bought a rifle that has a Russ Hamm lock on it and had to weld the tip of the sear that was chipped and not moving the fly to engage the half cock notch. Now I have to harden it and am looking for advice on how to do it. FRJ

    My budy, the cheapskate

I just shot my 54 after 2 months of being loaded, fired like a champ first time. I don't see any reason to fire it and clean it every day. I just keep a scrap of leather between the nipple and the hammer until I'm going to use it. As for the caps I dont see any reason not to reuse them but I...

After shooting -- cleaning. There's the rub!

This is a preety long thread already so I'll just add one thing. I used to use hot water BUT found that I would always get rust out of the barrel a few days after cleaning. On another web site I was informed that the hot water was causing the rust. I stopped using hot and went to cold and never...

    new(to me) rock lock

I'm thinking of using it for deer just because the flintlock makes for a little more fun than my percussion. While the 45 is legal for elk in Washington I feel its a little light for them.I'll probably do more paper punching than anything just like most everyone. FRJ

    Horrible Shooting

What rear sight are you using? If its a Lyman type target sight it will require a bunch of clicks to raise the impact point. If its another kind I'm not sure what they require. I would adjust my windage first and then adjust for elevation. What range are you doing this at? 25yards will not show...

    new(to me) rock lock

Hi Mike, They are also commonly called "flintlocks" but I kinda think that any hard, sharp "rock" would do as its just cutting off pieces of the frizen that causes sparks to ignite and set off the priming charge. You however would know better than me and that's why I asked the question as I dont...

    Brush stuck in barrel

Surely the breech plug should be threaded. No heat is not necessary, just a gentle tap on a wrench should loosen it right up.Make sure to pad it so as to not mar the finish. DONT try to shoot it out!!!! I doubt if it would work anyhow due to the airspace in a brush. I'd try a worm and just twist...

    new(to me) rock lock

I just picked up a new to me rock lock. It's 45cal and I'm wondering where to start with a powder charge. I'm thinking starting at 45gr 3f and maxing out at 85 or so. What are your opinions.Naturally if accuracy starts to go down the tube before max is reached I'll rethink my ideas. FRJ

    Lyman Warranty?

A friend bought a new GPR after shooting mine. It wouldn't go off most of the time and took 2 or 3 caps to get it to go. He sent it back to Lyman and they sent it back saying there was nothing wrong with it. He had to pay the shipping both ways. I took it apart and found a steel burr in the hole...

    Lyman GPR

I've seen lots of pitted barrels shoot just fine. Im surprised that no one asked what powder and charge is being shot I've sent you an e mail on that. Just clean the barrel and shoot what I told you about way before you start spending money on stuff thats real expensive and you may not need.Frank

    ?'s on cva 54 hawkens.....safe??

I was using pyrodex in my GPR and couldn't get it to shoot very good. Let it sit around a year of so while I did other things.Picked it up about a year ago and decided to try real black powder. What a difference!!!!!!! With real black it shoots better than some centerfires!!!!With 67year old...
