    Stripping a stock

any good paint stripper will remove varnish, or you can sand it off (yuck) as for the greasy feel, you could use a little soap and water or a soft cloth with alcohol to help remove it, it may be to much linseed oil which will get very sticky if you use to much and don't rub it in. good luck.

    Tent question

Here are a few things to remember, Sunforger is a treatment...not a canvas...you can have Sunforger treatments put on any fabric, so the canvas is as important as the treatment. A good 10 oz pre-shrunk cotton canvas with a tight weave is about all you need for a good camp. If the treatment is...

    Tents

Do you mean a pyramid tent ? With the amount of fabric that is used to build one of those thing and the usable space you get you would be better off with a wall tent. besides I don't think they are period unless you are a miner or a railroad worker ( late 1800 ) they were sold by Sears in their...

    Antiquing a production barel

After you strip the barrel, sand off the sharp edges to give it a more used look. strip the varnish off the stock and apply a boiled linseed oil finish ( lots of rubbing )this will help. Or if you don't want to take all that time and trouble, tie a string to it and drag it...

    Accuracy question

About any caliber will shoot fine at 25-50 yards. If you want to shoot farther, a heavier ball is needed. My son has a new rifle with a colerain barrel in 50 cal. 44 inch. (c) weight. had it built into a dickert style. Now his eyes are a lot younger than mine but a 49XX is not a bad score for...

    low front sites

You have to remember that and old man back then was 35 years old, and the youth had the eye sight to make those low sights work. When I was in my late twenties to late thirties I had great eye sight and shot those low sights, now I'm 57 and need the tall sights. It all comes with age.

    Loading a flintlock

I totally agree. I have never picked the touch hole before firing and I would put my rifle up against any other for speed. But if you think that it makes your gun faster, them by all means do it. shooting a flinter is a mind game to start with, so whatever makes you better, keep it up. but if...

    Firing a Flintlock upside down

We used to do public shooting demonstrations for the pilgrims and it was a great crown pleaser. A well tuned lock is ALWAYS a plus for any type of shooting not just a few simple trick shots. The aiming point by the way is exactly the same at 25 & 50 yards, but we shot at 25 yards or less.

    flints

Check with people who knapp flint points (arrow heads) most of them will make gun flints for about $.75 each. If you are taking a trip through Ohio, stop by flint ridge, the locals will sell you a bucket of flint or buy the pound. Here in Michigan we can find small amounts of flint in the...
