    First Build - stock shaping

This weekend, I installed the ram rod guides, entry pipe, started shaping the fore stock, and started on the muzzle cap. Many thanks to those who have offered advice and guidance so far. Here's where we are at! The guides and entry pipe were much more difficult, and took much more time than I...

Don't worry Fred. I see nothing clearly. :rotf:

    First Build - stock shaping

Thank you sir. I'm doing my best to keep my foot off the throttle. Since this is my first gun, I'm really anxious to see it done!

    First Build - stock shaping

Thanks Fred, That picture really helps out. I started to go in to brain lock yesterday, and decided to put my tools down before I made a mistake!

    First Build - stock shaping

I started a new thread on my build. I spent a fair amount of time in the garage this weekend on the stock. Thought I'd catch everyone up on the progress! At this point in the game, I still believe I have a lot of wood to remove, but I'm only taking of a shaving at a time, for...

Update: Cut my dovetails for barrel lugs. I cheat. I need a wooden block to guide my cuts. Ain't gots the skilz to freehand: Pinned barrel in: My little tool for drilling the tang bolt: Tang bolt and trigger plate in. I know I made some goofs here. It is my understanding now that...

    First Build!

Hi Dave, Thanks for the advice. I like the idea of soldering on a trigger extension. To answer your question about plans, my answer is...sorta. I'm referring to them here and there but am sort of winging it, which explains how I got here in the first place  I'm a slow learner, but...

    First Build!

Update - first thing I learned is to buy a main spring removal tool. Although I took it off several times with channel locks, I managed to snap it. :cursing: Now, $50 later I've got a new spring and tool on the way. So, I almost have the entire lock with guts inletted, but now seem to have...

    First Build!

Update: My first attempt at routing the belly patch channel did not go well. Knowing better, but doing it anyway, I just clamped a straight edge to the gun and routed. There was hardly anything to clamp to since the gun is so thin, and of course, the board moved and my cut drifted about 1/16...

    First Build!

I agree. The bit is not sharp, and I should have spent more time trying to make it so. For what they cost, I was expecting more as far as the cutting surface. My experience with drilling wood is that a brad point bit should be used, especially when drilling end grain. If anyone knows of a...

    First Build!

Hi Dave, Thanks for the advice. I'll keep that in mind in the future (hopefully I won't need it), but I already started routing the channel, so it looks like I'm going that route. I'll just do my best and see how it turns out!

    First Build!

Well boys and girls, something was bound to happen...it was just going too smoothly! Despite my best efforts to keep everything straight and level with the ramrod channel, the bit decided to do its own thing and punch a hole though the belly about 8 inches in. Here's my setup: I had the bit...

    First Build!

Thanks, I may end up turning this expensive piece of maple into an expensive piece of firewood before it's all over. I have ample opportunity to still mess this up, however, I accept that, and am comfortable with failure.

    First Build!

Yes, there's definitely an element of OCD with the garage! It's all I have....the wife has everything else... I did a little work this weekend. Here are some pics of my ramrod channel. There was major pucker factor whilst routing the channel. Not much wood to stabilize and I don't...

    First Build!

Thanks MSW for the advice. A funny story about shop lighting... one evening, working under the garage lights, I actually inlaid a strip of redwood (thinking it was dark cedar)instead of cedar in a strip kayak I built. The next day when I took the boat out in the sun, the redwood stuck out like...

    First Build!

The barrel is the plain old straight type, and the barrel fits like a glove! I used my dado set with shims and made several test channels on scrap wood to get the width almost perfect. All it needed was a few light passes with a sanding block for a final fit.

    First Build!

Howdy, My name is Mike, and I thought I'd share my first build with everyone, and perhaps get a few hints and tips from the experts along the way  . What I've started with is a .36 cal. TOW classic golden age kit, with one small deviation.... I am going to try and build the stock from...

    First build...Southern Rifle

My apologies. I thought there were questions on how to inlet barrels. I was just trying to show how I did it. I have no intention of starting a thread. Thanks

    First build...Southern Rifle

Hi Fellers, I've been lurking this building forum for a month or so, completely fascinated by the art of making a firearm. The amount of talent here is incredible. For me, as a means of testing the waters without too much of a financial commitment, I've decided I'd endeavor to build a...
