Powder Load testing in the Remington 1858

I use a 30 grain load in my 1858 and that load seems to work for me. I can get a four inch group at twenty yards with it. It always shoots low left but it groups well. I have been told by a number of people that a lighter load around 20-22 grains would get me more accuracy. I couldn't see how...

take-down and cleaning the Remington 1858

I made a full take down and cleaning video for the 1858. I don't think any of you need to watch it and it's over twenty minutes long. So you might want to pass on that if you already know that pistol inside and out but i have a few questions. mostly things people have brought up after seeing it...

.54 cal percussion cap with set trigger: clean up and shooting

Posted a video of me shooting my brothers Connecticut valley arms percussion .54 cal. I had to clean it up a bit first because it was sitting in the basement for the last two years. He is off with the navy but before he left he apparently loaded this gun and couldn't get it to go off. Then he...

Swedish Fire torch: Cooking baked beans and Vienna sausage

I didn't mean it to come off that way. I just said that because some people missed why I was using 550 cord. No big deal.

    Shooting the Remington 1858

I normally use ballistol to lube the cylinder. That's probably where my problem is. I've used bore butter and i could get 5 cylinders out of it using that. The problem is it was almost 90 degrees that day and at that temperature bore butter becomes almost unusable.

    Shooting the Remington 1858

This is by far my favorite pistol in my collection to shoot. It takes a bit of work to re-load but I'm getting better at it. I've found that after shooting two cylinders I have to give it a quick cleaning otherwise the cylinder becomes hard to get out. I didn't do quite as well as i would have...

Swedish Fire torch: Cooking baked beans and Vienna sausage

I've actually never done it with a spit log. It would be nice because you wouldn't need any twine to bind it. i just never have a log around where i go camping. I normally just have to use whatever is laying on the ground and stick to what i can cut up with my camp saw. Like i said in the...

Swedish Fire torch: Cooking baked beans and Vienna sausage

I have no idea how traditional this method is or where it actually comes from. I leaned it from an eagle scout when I was in high school. I was never a scout myself but I knew a few. When i go camping I ether use this method of alcohol stoves. I actually don't know much about traditional camping...

.54 caliber Hawken long rifle range report

Well that actually helps a lot. Money is a bit tight right now so I’ll have to go down to the log cabin next week when I get paid. What stinks is that the box of .530 in the video is brand new. I only shot 8 rounds out of it. Maybe I can get some extra thick patches for those.

.54 caliber Hawken long rifle range report

I should also note that i used a .530 Hornady round ball with 60 grains of FF Goex powder.

.54 caliber Hawken long rifle range report

Thanks. I have no idea who built this rifle and nether dues anyone I show it to. I can't find any markings on it and I inherited it from my dad. I asked him and he told me he bought it at a gun show from some older guy twenty years ago. So it's kind of an enigma. As a side note the rifling in...

.54 caliber Hawken long rifle range report

It is going to be a bench gun from now on. I have a .50 jaeger style flint lock that I hunt with. I unfortunately inherited the short stocky German genetics from my moms side of the family. I'm only about 5'4" 185 pounds. This rifle is a little to big for me to be carrying threw the woods all...

.54 caliber Hawken long rifle range report

I took my .54 caliber hawken long rifle out to the farm and put a few rounds down range. I've actually never shot it from the bench before so I was a little surprised to find that it was shooting off. It shot about 6" low and about 2.5" to the right. I didn't have a brass punch to move the front...

    Remington Model 1858 accuracy testing

Took my revolver out to the range and decided to do a video showing the accuracy of these cap and ball revolvers. I get a lot of manure from people at the range and online when I bring this gun out or show it in a video. People seem to think that these are inaccurate, unsafe, a pain to shoot. I'm...

Remington 1858 .44 revolver: Best C&B revolver for new shooters.

This is a range video and table top on my Remington model 1858. I wanted to make a video for people who are thinking about getting a Cap and ball gun. I'm no expert on them but I shoot my M1858 in my videos a lot and get quite a few questions about it. I think more people should give the cap and...

    Hand Gonne loading

What are these people doing? I've never seen someone load any kind of muzzleloader with a large mallet and a tea bag. Also he was pouring directly from the powder flask. I think they might be doing it wrong. Link

    My Pennsylvania long rifle

I don't think so but I'm not sure, That's just what i was told it was. The barrel is 36" long so it is a little shorter than other ones I've looked at. If it isn't a long rifle than what is it? I don't know enough about these guns to ID them and like I said before this gun doesn't have any...

    My Pennsylvania long rifle

here is a few pictures i took before i restored the gun to shooting order. It's probably not worth much because it's all iron furniture and the pitting around the lock but it's still shoots. And one of the gun i actually got that deer with, just for fun.

    My Pennsylvania long rifle

It doesn't have any identifying markings on it that i know of. It's been in my family possession for like 45 years but i actually don't know where it came from. My dad got a deer at 200 yards with it about six years ago before he lost interest in the sport. Like I said it's a little big for...
