    Lock Inletting problem

If it was mine I'd make a thin patch large enough to cover the entire area of the lock mortise. First make a pattern, tape a piece of paper taught over the lock mortise. Using an exacto knife follow the lock mortise. Take this cut out and lay it in the bottom of the lock mortise. You may have...

    Filler

For very small gaps around items that won't be removed (pipes, toe plate, butt plate, etc.) on a finished rifle you can use colored wax. Woodcraft sells Briwax softwax filler strips in a varitiy of colors. Once the finish has dried select a color close to the shade of the stock (you can mix...

    Failed attempt...

I feel you pain! My number one sat for years until I got the urge to finish her. But the more I worked on her the more I saw it was hopeless. I threw in the towel stripped the parts from the stock and consigned her to the scrap box. I ordered a new stock and went on from there. I hate to see a...

    Which Bandsaw to buy?

I have a 14" Grizzly Z series bandsaw and am very happy with it. Their Z series of tools have US made motors. I have several other Grizzly tools and they all work well.

    GETZ Barrels

Don't know anyone who has them in stock. You'll either have to find someone who has one and beg, borrow or steal it from them, or order one from Getz.

    Breeching a barrel

I'm sure it can be done, but I'm not sure it can be done without using an engine lathe. I'm sure someone else can shed more light on the subject than I can.

    Any Gunfair/shows coming up??

Dixon's gunmakers fair is always the last full weekend in July. If you've never made the trip its well worth it. I know there are some CLA (Contemporay Longrifle Assoc.) shows during the year, I see the ads in Muzzle Blasts from time to time. I'm sure there are other events.

    Barrel Question??

The main cause of ringed barrels is someone short started a ball and then fired the gun. I'd let this one go.

    What do I use?

Flehto is right, the stock has to be sealed or your stripes will bleed. Check out Eric Kettenbergs website, he had some information of doing faux stripeing. From what I have read what was used was plain old india ink. My advice as always when trying something new is to practice on scrape first!

    Nick Quick Fix

Two things I've used to fix small nicks are shellac sticks or colored wax. Shellac sticks come in a varity of colors, you melt the stick over an open flame, collect some on a blunt knife and apply it to the cut. After it is dry, cut it down to the surface (apply masking tape around the adjactent...

    Building a Flintlock

Congradulatons on your purchase. I know its hard to wait to start, but I would wait for the barrel. The barrel is the heart of the gun, thats why its always the first thing inleted. It gives the forestock and forearm support during working one the stock. And allot of things even on a pre-inlet...

    Building a Flintlock

I'd recomend that before you order your parts you order a few books. I'd recommend Peter Alexanders "The Gunsmith of Grenville County" and or "The Art of Building the Pennsylvania Longrifle" by Dixon, Ehrig & Miller. Take some time and read them, then re-read them. Once you have digested some of...

    help

I've gotten wood from Wayne Dunlap and Pecatonica and have been really happy with the wood I've purchased from both of them. I have a grade three blank from Dunlap with fantastic curl. Can't help much with the source of silver sheet. I know that some people have used old coins (pre-1965 US coins...

    striping a ramrod

What ever you do, don't wrap it with masking tape and then use a torch to give it the stripe. I speak from first hand knowledge that its very easy to end up with a sticky mess!
