    Quality Baker Rifle Replica?

Read through this thread and have some pointers as a fellow Canadian black powder shooter. I went down the road briefly with black powder substitutes and while I did get decent performance out of them, you will get BETTER and more reliable ignition with real black powder. Forget about...

Middlesex vs. Discriminating General The Same!

    I detect some not-so-passive aggressiveness :P

    Alliant powder for black powder

That's what BP goes for here, while some sub's go for $20! I don't know where to get Black MZ at an acceptable price in Ontario, but from what I've read I'm willing to give it a try.

    Youth bp firearms?

This may be because I started off with a Bess but my Traditions Kentucky .50cal flintlock feels like a twig next to it! :P Even a couple of my 'regular gun' buddies asked me whether I had mistakenly ordered a youth model... so there you go! It feels very light and I doubt smaller hands will...

    Barricade?

Odd, I've read plenty of great reviews & related videos singing Ballistol's praise, especially for the our black powder arms. I just got a bit and it's really puts a shine on, and is excellent at cleaning out fouling. I've got some patches soaking it up too at the moment, I'm going to test it...

    Rifle shooting low?

Coming from a (basic) engineering background this one seems a bit strange! I don't imagine the touch hole would be able to 'feed' the combustion at all, seeing that the pressures blowing out sideways at the lock are the same as the pressures blasting the projectile downrange. If anything, a...

    "1806" .69 Baker?

Ah, for whatever reason I was sure the smoothbore Baker's sold by DG/MilitaryHeritage/Spencer's Mercantile were of .69cal, they are in fact .62 They still advertise that a rifled .62 is available from an American barrel manufacturer, so that might almost alleviate some of the 'oh no not an...

    "1806" .69 Baker?

...I've been searching, nay, HOPING that a rifled .69 Baker would find it's way here in the under $800 category... One can dream.

Middlesex vs. Discriminating General The Same!

Les is the fellow at Lion's Den who proofed my DG / Military Heritage but bought from Spencer's Mercantile India pattern Bess. I've had nothing but excellent fun with this musket, the lock is solid & the barrel is beautiful. I used a boroscrope and gave it a good inspection after my first few...

    R.E.A.L. Conicals

I have the heavier 320 grain for my .50, but it's a 1-60 twist in the rifling. I haven't taken it target shooting but from everything I've read that twist isn't meant for conicals.. any input?

    R.E.A.L. Conicals

I have them in .50 cal, haven't shot a terrible amount of them however. I'm curious about lube options, or if it's ever a good idea to shoot them dry.

    Casting lead yet again.

I like my Lee mold, a combo REAL and .490 round ball. I can make both or 1 at a time. Trick is, I found, to keep the lead at a good temp, but more importantly I keep a bowl of water with a sponge sitting in it to occasionally cool the mold once things start taking too long to turn solid. It...

    lubing a maxi ball

I did some looking around and couldn't find that particular item, could you tell me what it's marketed as?

    American Pioneer Powder

Just to clarify, I really noticed the black sludge in the Bess because normally when I'm plinking around I was initially hand loading with loose ball over a cotton ball wad. That left the bore 'dusty' and smooth even after several shots. So that lead's me to suspect the white glue I'm using to...

    American Pioneer Powder

Went to the range today and let loose about 50 shots through my Bess with paper cartridge and another 20 or so through my Kentucky 50, patches saturated with TC17 (basically blue bore butter, nearly exactly the same) I'm kicking myself because I failed to get any decent footage or retrieve my...

    American Pioneer Powder & Flintlocks

That's interesting. Until now I've yet to read of anyone's actual experience with APP and dry patches. I'm going to try dry patches myself and a bunch I just melted some T17 (the blue bore butter) into, and see if it makes any difference.

    Track's 1797 Bess- any reviews?

I just got back from visiting my friendly local reenactor merchant, and he was quite sure that this is the same Bess that he, Loyalist Arms & Military Heritage all get from the same factory in India. Excellent shooter but as noted the fit and finish reflects the -$500 price tag. Not a big deal...

    Weight of a .750 ball?

I've been using this handy calculator myself :P http://www.beartoothbullets.com/rescources/calculators/php/roundball.htm

    American Pioneer Powder

What surprises me a little bit is the relative lack of reviews on the stuff, and the ones that exist vary from 'this stuff is great!' to 'DONT BOTHER!! Three thumbs down!". I have a small tripod on order for my digital camera and plan to have a decent sized video of my experience firing APP...
