.54 cal round ball on deer

Back to the matters at hand. I've killed more than a dozen mid-western whitetails with a .530 round ball. Usually with 82 grains of FF but 70 grains of FFF worked equally. All, but one heart shot doe which went 200 yards, dropped within 50 yards. However, I believe 60 yards was my longest shot.

Colorado big game cutoff is 4/4/2017

I drew both deer and elk for archery season but no muzzleloader tags. Mr.Hill and I will get a work out. Sean please get in touch with me. If nothing else than to burn some powder at the new Palisade range. Id like to talk antelope with you.

First Time Deer Hunting and I Blew It!

Failure is life's greatest teacher. Never change your load with out testing it first. I hunt with a .62 Flint Lock in Colorado and consider 90 grains of FF with a .600 round ball to be sufficient for elk let alone those Illinois whitetails. I lived in Illinois for 23 years and killed several of...

You didn't put those Howard Hills up in the barn now? I know I enjoy both.

    Squirrel Loads?

Drop your charge to 2-1/2 Drams ( apx. 68 grains ) of FF. To tighten a pattern drop the charge. My favorite squirrel load for a 20 gauge is 2-1/2 drams FF two over power wads, no felt wad, followed by 1 oz. of #6 shot and a thin over shot wad. A good alternative is to use 4 over shot wads...

Fat ball/thin patch or thin ball/thick patch?

I've always preferred a thin ball and thick patch. Much easier to load in a dirty bore. Unfortunately not all of my guns thought the same. Let your individual arm tell you its preference, if you listen it will tell you...

    ball size 12gauge fowler

I once had a Curly NWTG which liked a .715 bare ball or a .690 RB with .020 pillow ticking patch. I loved the gun but found it to be brutal on my old body so I sold her. I still have the .690 mold if you need one. Snow

    Thoughts on "Gauge" to select..

One point. I have had a 20 a 16 and the venerable 12 gauge. All work, all did what was asked of them. But with the round ball the 16 is solid, the 20 is versatile and the 12 is brutal.

When to Use FFg vs. FFFg

MMy understanding is that 3F produces higher pressures than 2 F. I presume in the days when shooters used guns of somewhat questionable origin that these excessive pressures where considered unsafe in larger bored arms which oft times where loaded heavier. With today's superiority of...

    20 gauge smoothy which powder

Don't be lonely Brown Bear, I have several pounds of 1F which I use in my 20 and 16 gauge smoothies with shot loads. Much tighter patterns

    20 gauge smoothy which powder

Asking questions here be a good thing, a lot of wisdom and experience on this board. Keep in mind the information garnered here gives you direction and new ideas but very little is gospel. You just keep working on it, which in part, is the joy of this hobby.

Thanks Idaho Ron ... you've done it now

That's what I am looking for...tell me about this paper patching. Roundball was fine for Illinois whitetails but these Colorado elk are a tad larger :shocked2:

    Bought new fowler from TVM

Mike you will find that each smooth bore has its own personality. You could try a .562 Round ball with .015 patching. I would try those .570 with out patching. My favorite smoothbore load is to use an 1/8" over powder wad followed by a cushion wad, a bare "chewed" round ball and another over...

    Round Ball Accuracy?

My bow of choice is a Howard Hill Wesly Special and with it I can consistently hit a 6 inch circle at 30 yards. With any of my smoothbores I can shrink that down to 3" and I'm a poor shot... I definitely earned my nick name Blind Dog! :shocked2: Now at 50 yards...that's a different story.
