Show us your flintlock squirrel rifles!

Well folks I guess I have the ugly duckling of the group but it does the job. It has hand made metalwork and a plain ol brown walnut finish and is banged up and bruised---- ahhhhh, but it will dispatch those tree rats within 40 yards if my eyes can spot them.

    1805 Harpers Ferry

I have one of those pistols. A few things- don't go scrubbing the barrel too much (nothing too abrasive) or the finish will go with the elbow grease. I shoot a 570 ball with 40 grains and a .015 patch out of mine and it hits a bit left with most any load. Mine does not have a rear sight so I...

    Practice in the snow...

Ah, That reminds me of home (NY), I would be lucky to see an inch a year here in GA. I miss those days when hunting but going to work and such in the snow-- not much fun. Beautiful pics

Need ideas for a shoot at my club

Man, all great sugestions. I have no illusions that it will be a great turnout the frist time we have the match but I want to get it in the club and work on it from there. I think it would be wise to introduce some of the BP shots in the ironman contest that the club is working on. If we get the...

Need ideas for a shoot at my club

I have been pushing for a black powder match at my club. Background: mostly a shotgun club (est. 1953) with a 25 yard pistol range that can hold 8-10 shooters at a time, a 50 and 100 yard rifle range that can hold 5-6 shooters at a time. The club has gone through some growing pains lately (well...

    BP winter temperature storage

I store mine in those army ammo cans that seal with a rubber gasket when closed. The powder has been in 130 to 10 degrees in the garage here in Georgia with no ill effects.

    32 cal fun

I can shot 15-20 shots if I want but I spit lube the patch every time and seems to do enough to keep it shooting as long as my arms don't fall off form loading it. Love my 32, its a fun little shooter.

    I've got an itch!

I've been saying just one more gun---that will do it-- that will be all I need, that's it........ every year for the last 31 years !!!!!!!!! :surrender:

    Newbie Question on Caliber

I have or had a 32, 45, 50, and the 58 cal. I think I would say, 32 is fun, cheap, a small game gun, and oh yea-- fun. The 45 is a marginal deer round--good to 75 yards, need to place the shot, and fun. The 50 was a good deer caliber probably to 100 yards, need to place the shot, and fun. The 58...

    Lyman GPR or Custom rifle?

I am in favor of the custom built guns, I know you said you are looking for a hunter only but I think a custom would be there for you in the times you want to target shoot or show the youngins how to shoot the old flintlock rifle. The production guns are nice and most of them are worth every...

    Black Powder Substitutes

Dang it, you type just a bit faster that I do. :surrender:

    Black Powder Substitutes

I'm sure others can give you the details but flintlocks just don't like the substitutes, I believe they (subs) just don't burn fast and hot enough to make the ignition reliable in the pan-touchhole-main charge transition. Hope this helps. Maybe other member live in the same neck -of-the-woods as...

    cold weather

In defense of the Triple 7 I had (and I am not going to put up alot of fight for it) it was an older can of it that I had from my inline rifle. I did harvest a really nice ten pointer whitetail with the Triple 7. The fake stuff is effected by time and conditions. I think I had the can from the...

    cold weather

I test the two one time--kind of. I finished putting my 58 mountain capper together and had to shoot it. Well the temps were in the single digits and snowing.(NY if you guys are scratching you heads about my Georgia address nowdays) I loaded up and snap no bangs, hang fires and all kinds of...

    1858 Remington - 1st C & B

Man what can I add, Great info and explanation as always. I use .454 round balls and 22 grains of 3f for my plinking loads and about 35 grains for my max loads. I do the lubed overpowder wads so 35 grains is about max out of my Pietta. I have the same nipples in my cylinder after 800-900...
